Does anyone else think QuickBooks is terrible?

Yes.

i used desktop for 19 years and was able to manage my very small business.
Now, with QB online, everything is either difficult, limited or downright stupid. It’s just infuriating.

It is really quiet shocking how bad it is after all these years and the money they've made. Actually even signing up for this forum right now to comment broke and ended up with some cookies error I've never seen. Intuit seems like a great example of when a company holds a huge market share and gets complacent.

Does anyone else think QuickBooks is terrible?

YES!  1000's times YES!  Let's start with the top 5 issues I see as an Accountant working with Clients on QBO:

1)  Rules - QBO is not AI stop asking clients to create rules.  It constantly bugs you to create.

2)  Duplicate transactions - Amazing how many clients I find with duplicate transactions because they simply added transactions from the banking tab instead of finding a match.  Overstates income, very bad for taxes.

3)  Transfers - not everything is a transfer and CC pairing doesn't work properly 100% of the time

4)  User Interface changes constantly - I have over a 100 clients and they all seem to have a different menu.

5)  They do not listen to feedback.

In addition to the failures of this absolutely irredeemable software you list in your post, "not listening to feedback" tops the list for me. Intuit makes in painfully clear than it does NOT care how awful their messy garbage software is. They know AND they don't care.

There's no better proof of this than what QBO support rep Mal told me during a support call yesterday:  "Don't use the Quickbooks Online Accountant app. It doesn't work. Use a browser instead."  Their own employees are telling their customers how utterly unreliable QBO is.

Intuit needs to spend less on their execs and their fake positive reviews and more on support. Today I was timed out of a chat (with a bot) and got a call back when I requested it, but then was disconnected. Basic problems cannot be fixed and their instructions for doing things don’t work most of the time because of all the underlying weaknesses in their system. Ironically all we were trying to do is renew the payroll subscription (right, give them more money). I don’t think it is possible and even if it is my client would rather we not renew at this point.

I have everything required to sync qb time with qbdt. It just plain doesn't work. I've uninstalled, reinstalled, gone through the online support, found a thing called the missing manual... No help. On 3 different occasions I have spent 3 or more hours on a phone call that started as a chat. Let the tech access my PC for over an hour... Each time started with payroll saying not theirs, contact desktop, who said contact qb time, and they say call the payroll department, and each time ends with being hung up on. Not for my attitude or being foul-mouthed. Just <click> not even a follow up email wanting me to take a stupid survey. I just can't believe that this is the best a business owner can get!

Fats forward a couple of years and now there will be no desktop. They did away with all but the most expensive product in a bid to force mass migration to qbo. But it's still horrible!

Id sage comparable? I like the things QuickBooks does, except for the having to find a workaround for every detail, and all the stuff you think it would do that it just doesn't.

What kind of business do you run? A service company?

I think that is the biggest issue. Our company file was built virtually overnight and using the most straightforward way possible for speed, 20 years ago. QuickBooks has added features that would make things faster and easier since, but the company database is built on the foundation of the original entries. Some of the allocation and tracking that exists now didn't back then. Couple that with the fact that Intuit is using the same layer upon layer strategy for new releases, rather than wipe the slate clean and start fresh at some point. The result is redundancy built in from development and user that makes everything too convoluted, so we find a working backdoor to get what we need. But every time we go around this error or that, and the devs are doing the same, and support is doing it too, overwrite something that would have been useful.

I think that a complete reboot would fix a lot of the issues we all face, but it isn't lucrative enough for them to sell a decent, logical product that will be working for years to come.... I absolutely hate the "residual income" capitalism of the modern day. I liked when you bought a thing and it was yours until you destroyed it, lost it, gave it away, sold it, or died.

I totally agree withyou, Online version is the worst software I have ever used, all these rules and tags are a waste of time, I don't need a software to tell me what to do, just need it to work accordingly, buyer be ware, if you go back to desk top, you will loos all liabilities payment you made, all your date will probably be damage,or corrupted,  there is no way of recovering your payroll, so my advise don't switch to online, I have been struggling to get back everything since July 2023, all reconciliation are off balance, vendors [payments that I made are not showing up, and checks that were posted on prior years are showing up as credits. OMG. what nightmare I am in.

Hey, same here.  I was forced to change to the online version. IT IS HORRIBLE!!!  However, I discovered that we do not have to switch to the cloud version - there are still some desktop versions that we can purchase.  After doing one payroll run in the cloud version, I am ready to convert back to the desktop.  I would have never left if I did not think we had to. I waited until Jan. 1 to start online so that I could do year end reports, payroll reports and w-2's, etc. to prevent issues with payroll history.  I had already seen there were major issues with setting up a nonprofit church account. Churches aren't required to carry SUI and they continued to tell me I had to have a tax account number for it. I finally made it through one payroll and it was by pure luck. I hate to

flip-flop but I think that is my best option.  I have made no other entries or transactions online.

Jeer Button? for canned answers and moderators who dont read and just copy and paste?

I am requesting a jeer button in addition to the cheer button.

1. I am so tired of asking a question and having a moderator just copy and paste some canned answer without even reading my post.

2.  I am so tired of having to wade through all the "copied and pasted" answers.   I can search and easily find these answers. Please stop copy and pasting.  If you must just provide a link.  But don't clog up the thread with canned copied and paste answers (especially since most don't even begin to answer the question)

3.  I am so tired of having to wade through a bunch of flowery language.  I assume the QB moderators have been instructed to look sympathetic and compassionate.  But the esoteric flowery language only serves to clog up the answer.

4.  Please start reading our questions.   I suggest that moderators read the question out loud at least twice before they attempt to post answer.

5.  I wish that the moderators were more intentional and deliberate about an answer.  I have often wondered if they get paid by the word, because It doesn't seem that their true desire is to help the customer.

Thanks for reading!

Amen and Amen!! I don't usually post a question that is that easily answered or I would have looked it up.  The other answer I hate is to contact "support".  I have done that multiple times before asking here. 🤦‍

I've been trudging through with them for 10 years. Constant freezing screens, payroll glitches, company file issues, etc. and the horrible support just exacerbates the whole situation. At this very moment I sit before a frozen screen for bank downloads. All of our users are having the same issues with various sections (payroll, bill payments, etc.). I'm looking into other options now...

I originally was on Desktop Premiere and while it had its quirks I managed to muddle through.  Had gotten used to it and had my reports built to show just what I wanted them to.  I was sailing right along and then we get the email from Intuit telling us Premiere desktop would be discontinued and we would need to switch to the online version.  I waited until after year end before I started using it because I could see it was not going to export my payroll history correctly.  The advanced 24/7 support was a joke.  They pretty much read from these articles on here.  I completed one payroll run and nothing else and just could not deal with it.  I contacted Intuit sales and they tell me that we did not have to switch to QBO that we could go with Enterprise Desktop.  I convinced my board of directors to allow me to switch back although it is more expensive than QBO for the first year.

I am extremely happy with the Enterprise version.  It exported everything over from my Premiere desktop and interface is exactly the same.  The few times I needed support to get my one payroll out of QBO it was almost pleasant.  They can communicate with me and my southern dialect and I can understand them.  I do the accounting for my church as a volunteer, so you can imagine how frustrating it was to deal with their outsourced foreign support.  It made it difficult to maintain my church volunteer attitude.   I hope you find something you like better.  I have heard Gusto for payroll is a good one, and maybe find some other solution for your bookkeeping.
