Filing retroactively for ERTC for 2020, HOW?!?

This is pathetic! There is no way the QuickBooks Desktop setup for tracking any of these credits is viable. First of all, if you missed the setup for 2020 for COVID qualifying sick pay and tried to do it in early 2021 when preparing the 941 you were out of luck as the payroll tables were changed and QB would not allow changes to the prior year paychecks. Now when trying to amend the 941s for ERTC after the March 1, 2021 Guidance on the Employee Retention Credit under Section 2301 of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act, again you are out of luck. The payroll setup had to be done and the wages entered as a ridiculous "Other Addition" in order to track the eligible wages. What good does that do? If you are like us and track wage additions by the position, using the "Other Addition" setup for CARES Emp appears on the reports and paycheck stubs instead of as the payroll type your company uses for that employee's position. You can't get a Worksheet 1 retrospectively or without this ridiculous setup!

And don't get me started on the enormous cost increase in QuickBooks Desktop Premier! Outrageous. Just because you choose not to pay annually they now line their pockets for 3 years worth of their "updates" (what a joke) when you purchase the Desktop version that is supported for payroll for 3 years.

Has anyone found a good solution to dumping this software? I have had enough of being gouged for annual payroll tables and tax forms that are not functional and poorly supported.

Filing retroactively for ERTC for 2020, HOW?!?

I came on the forum to hopefully find out that what was revealed to me today when I tried to amend our Q1'21 941 wasn't true (which, btw, I asked prior to Q-end to have the filing delayed so that I wouldn't have to amend....it's due 4/30, but they cannot 'stop' their filing schedule...grrr).  Are you kidding me that in order to amend and claim the ERC QB must unlock net pay and I must go back & delete every item in 'earnings' and move it to one-lump sum in 'other payroll items'??!!  For every.single.employee for every.single.paycheck in the entire quarter?!!!  This is completely ridiculous AND removes the ability to report on specific payroll items (payroll summary report).  This is the stupidest thing I've ever heard.  I wish it weren't true....

Hi there, Marni B.

Instead of editing the paycheck information per employee, we can use the payroll liability adjustment feature to reflect the credit in the tax form. Let me show you how:

  1. Go to the Employees menu
  2. Choose Payroll Taxes and Liabilities.
  3. Tap Adjust Payroll Liabilities.
  4. Use the same date as the last paycheck of the affected quarter. You can also use today's date if you’re working on the current quarter. The Effective Date is used to calculate amounts on your 940 and 941 forms as well as the Payroll Liability Balances Report.
  5. Hit Employee Adjustment if the item you're adjusting is a company-paid item. It updates the YTD info reported on the employee W-2 form.
  6. Select the employee.
  7. Complete the Taxes and Liabilities fields.
  8. Tick Accounts Affected and then OK.
  9. Repeat for other employees if you need to, and press OK

To learn more about this one, see the Adjust payroll liabilities in QuickBooks Desktop article. You can also try overriding the amount on the 941 forms. For additional tips on how to prepare the corrected form, check out the Correct or Amend Forms 941 and 940 article and follow the steps under the Prepare Form 941-X section.

If the option to override is unavailable, just manually file the form on the IRS website. Please refer to the IRS instructions for line-by-line assistance. Then, enter the correction for the quarter. Moreover, here are some of our help articles you can read more about Employee Retention Credit:

Filing retroactively for ERTC for 2020, HOW?!?

Hi there, Marni B.

I'm here to share some information about how 941-X works in QuickBooks.

For assisted payroll, we'll be the ones to correct the information on previously filed Form 941 and file the amendment form for you. That said, you'll want to give us a quick call or chat so we can pull up your account in a safe environment and amend your tax form. Here's how:

  1. Open QuickBooks.
  2. Go to the Help menu, then choose QuickBooks Desktop Help.
  3. Enter any keyword in the search bar, then press Enter.
  4. Click Contact Us at the bottom.
  5. Enter "File 941-X" in the description box, then select Continue.
  6. Choose a way to connect with us.

Although, if you really want to file the tax form on your own, feel free to inform our representative. This way, they'll be able to walk you through the whole process of amending. the form.

I also recommend reading these resources to know more about the list of items that can be corrected on 941-X:

I see how this becomes challenging on your end, @pacsuz.

For me to help you further, would you mind sharing what page you're referring to that you can't access or is not there?

If you're referring to the last articles provided by my colleagues about the list of items that can be corrected on 941-X, try to copy the links below and try to access this to other browsers:

If this works, let's clear your browser's cache to remove the piled-up data that might cause the issue you encountered. It might also be that the current one you're using has a temporary matter with the program, you can use another supported browser or device.

For additional questions about managing your tax forms, never hesitate to reply to this post. Take care.
