How can I assign a class designation to payroll entries?

I've got the steps you need to track your payroll entries, @rkurup.

You'll just have to turn on the class tracking feature to assign a class to your payroll. Let me guide you through the steps:

  1. Go to the Gear icon in your QuickBooks Online (QBO) account.
  2. Select Account and settings.
  3. Click the Advanced tab, then select the Categories section to edit.
  4. Check Track classes and check the Warn me when a transaction isn't assigned a class
  5. Under Assign classes, select One to entire transaction or One to each row in transaction.
  6. Then select Save, then Done.

To assign a class to your payroll entries, you can follow these steps:

  1. Go to the Gear icon.
  2. Select Payroll Settings.
  3. In the Accounting section, select the edit pencil icon.
  4. From the Class Tracking section, select the edit pencil icon to turn it on. Then choose how you want to track classes. 2.PNG
  5. Select Continue, then Done.
  6. Add a class for each employee, or assign one for all of them.
  7. Then select Continue, then Done to save your preferences.

You can also see this link for more details about the process: Turn on class tracking in QuickBooks Online.

Once you're all set, you might want to check out this link for guidance in paying your employees seamlessly: Process or run payroll.

You can always count on me if you need further guidance in efficiently supervising your payroll. Just add the details in your reply and I'll take care of them for you. Stay safe and more power to your business!

How can I assign a class designation to payroll entries?

I have followed all the steps you described.   After assigning classes to 175 employees, I hit the "continue" button, and nothing happens.  After spending quite some time on this yesterday, this morning I reset Chrome, closed all windows except QB and entered all the classes again.  Same result.  Nothing happens when I hit "continue".  How can I get QB to save these classes?

How can I assign a class designation to payroll entries?

Hi there, @Timely.

I'm here to help you assign classes to your employees without any further delay.

To clarify, do you want to apply these classes to your past transactions? Following these instructions below will ensure your success:

  1. Go to the Gear icon.
  2. Select Payroll Settings.
  3. In the Accounting section, select the Edit icon.
  4. Scroll down and select the Edit icon next to Want to update existing transactions.
  5. Choose a start date and click Update.
  6. Click Continue and then Done.

Doing these steps will update accounting preferences for past transactions. On the other hand, if it didn't save the classes after clicking Continue and Done is what you meant, we can perform basic troubleshooting steps to isolate the issue. Let's try accessing your account through an incognito window to rule out the possibility of a webpage issue. You can refer to these shortcut keys to open an incognito window in all supported browsers:

  • Chrome: Ctrl+Shift+N
  • Firefox: Ctrl+Shift+P
  • Safari: Command+Shift+N

Log in to your account and enter the classes. If it saves them, you may have accumulated too much historical data in your browser. I'd recommend clearing its cache so you can access QuickBooks with a clean slate. You can also use a different supported browser.
