How can I import payroll data into Quickbooks Enterprise?

I am currently performing payroll within Enterprise and would like to switch to a 3rd party software that does this task for me (currently looking at Paycom).  I am able to import time sheets into QB enterprise through the .iff file, but can't find how to import payroll information?  Ideally would need access to total employee pay amount $ by client and service item so I can run customer profitability reports to show how much payroll was used by client for a specific service.  Is this possible?  ...and what format would import need to be in?  Was thinking importing a journal entry may be an option? Thanks in advance.

How can I import payroll data into Quickbooks Enterprise?

I know how important it is to import your payroll information when using a 3rd party payroll software, smartin2. I'm here to share some insights.

At this time, you can only import CustomerVendorItems, and Chart of Accounts in QuickBooks Desktop. Importing payroll information is unavailable. As a workaround, you can enter them as journal entries.

Here's how to create a journal entry:

  1. Go to the Company menu.
  2. Select Make General Journal Entries.
  3. Fill out the fields to create your journal entry. Please make sure your debits are equal to your credits.
  4. Once done, click Save or Save & Close.

Additionally, I've included these articles that'll help you view useful information about your business and employees. This way, you'll be able to ensure your data is accurate:

Please know that I'm only a few clicks away if you have any follow-up questions, smartin2. Wishing you and your business continued success!

to clarify,  can't you import the G/L as an .iif file that creates the journal entry for you (which could include payroll data)?

Great to see you again in the Community, @smartin2. I'd be happy to share some details about importing the .iff file into QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT).

You can import the General Journal as an IFF file that has your payroll data. However, you'll want to create a backup file first. This process is done to avoid data loss or data damage.

Here's how to create a local backup:

  1. Go to the File menu and select Open or Restore Company.
  2. Select Restore a backup copy and then Next.
  3. Click Local Backup and select Next.
  4. Browse your computer for your backup company file. It should look like this: [Your company name].qbb.
  5. Select a folder to decide where to save your restored company file. Then select Open.
  6. Click Save when you're ready.

Once done, you can start importing the IFF file. If you're using QBDT 2019, select the Multi-user mode when importing. However, if it's the older version, use the Single User mode

Here's how to import the .iff file:

  1. Go to the File menu, select Utilities then click Import.
  2. Select IIF Files and Import IIF.
  3. Find the file, then select OK.
  4. Click Done once the import process has been accomplished.

I'd also recommend consulting an Accounting professional to help you with the process to make sure that your books are accurate.

I've got an article for you to check just in case you'll encounter any issues when importing the .iff file into QuickBooks Desktop: Improved IIF Import in QuickBooks 2019 and later.

I'll be around if you have further questions or concerns about entering prior payroll in QBDT. Take care and have a great day ahead!

I am having the same issue with QBO and Paycom.  Why would QB not want to interface a simple excel file.  Sounds like I need to find another accounting system.....

@Greg Chesley

You need to use a 3rd party tool to import JE.

Otherwise, you may purchase a 3rd party conversion service to switch from QBO to another accounting app.
