How do I record a refund from an insurance claim that exceeds the cost to repair?
Income. My SOP is to record all insurance claim checks as income unless the checks do not come to me. Then whatever the repair or replacement costs is expense for repair/replace.
I know that insurance is not income (unless it exceeds repairs) and you do not usually get a 1099 from insurance companies but it is easier than tracking exact costs related to claim repairs
