How do I set up a National Medical Support garnishment for my employee?

I'm here to help you set up up a garnishment for your employee, pwilson.

Before proceeding, I've listed a few things to remember:

  • If the garnishment varies per paycheck, you can set the amount to zero. You can update the garnishment amount by editing the paycheck once you run payroll
  • You can only add two garnishments per employee
  • If an employee has three or more garnishments, the rest can be added as other after-tax deduction

Here's how to add garnishment:

  1. Go to the Payroll menu and then select Employees.
  2. Choose the employee's name, then click to open.
  3. Beside Does [emploee's name] have any deductions?, click add deductions.
  4. On the drop-down, select Garnishment and Garnishment Type.
  5. Enter the description, amount requested, and the maximum percent of disposable income.
  6. Select OK.

To learn more about the garnishment type, please see this article: Setting up a Wage Garnishment.

Additionally, I've added an article that will help you manage retirement plan deductions and contributions in QuickBooks: Retirement Plan Deductions/Contributions.

In case you'll need assistance in dealing with payroll tasks, don't hesitate to get back on this thread. We're always here to help you.

How do I set up a National Medical Support garnishment for my employee?

Will this set up be pre-tax?  The reason I ask is because the garnishment is for Medical Support (Health Insurance for a child) and it is allowed to be pre-tax in the state.

Medical support is a form of child support that provides either cash medical support or health insurance. Cash medical support is ordered on the Income Withholding Order for Support (IWO) order/notice. Child support agencies send a National Medical Support Notice (NMSN) to the employer to order health insurance coverage for an employee’s child(ren).
