How to pay non-exempt employees who are not working during shelter-in-place?

My operation has to shut down as it is deemed non-essential and employees cannot work from home. I want to continue to pay them as otherwise, they will not have money to pay rent. They will not be qualified as 3 types under the Family First Coronavirus Response Act (FFCRA) as they are not sick nor taking care of family who is sick of COVID-19. So which pay type should I use to pay them? Paid time off? How will that affect payroll taxes? Is there any incentive or tax deduction that I am not laying off and paying my employees?

Thanks

How to pay non-exempt employees who are not working during shelter-in-place?

Thanks for checking in with us and providing us in-depth details of your payroll concern, siri0726.

With regard to what pay type to apply for your employees, it would be best to contact your accountant or tax advisor. They'll provide you detailed information about this one and how it will affect your payroll taxes.

Once they provided you the pay type, just follow the steps below on how to create the employee's paycheck:

  1. Go to Workers on the left side menu.
  2. Select Employees.
  3. Tick Run Payroll.
  4. Choose a schedule if you have more than one payroll schedule, then click Continue.
  5. Review the bank account to track this payroll transaction in, the pay period and pay date.
  6. Tap the employees you'd like to pay.
  7. Enter hours, compensation, memos, or any other necessary paycheck information.
  8. Press Preview payroll.
  9. Tick Submit payroll.
  10. Once done, click Finish Payroll.
