QBO there is a MAJOR flaw in your union payroll deductions per hour..... you need to have a box to enter hours for each deduction item separately when running payroll and everything would simply work correctly.
Currently your system adds up all regular, overtime, and double time hours worked but this does not work for union payroll. For example currently if i have an employee that has 40 regular hours, 10 overtime (1.5x) hours and 5 double time (2x) hours worked....QBO adds these as 55 hours. This is incorrect in most all unions as far as pay and deductions that I know of..... Yes it was actually 55 hours worked but these deductions are paid out separately at a multiple of the hourly rate... furthermore the deductions are deducted separately at a secondary multiple of a separate hourly rate.
PLEASE FIX THIS! it seems simple but hard for most to understand. I hope i have laid this out properly so as that it is better understood. again when running payroll if you simply had a box to enter payroll hours again in each deduction it would work great. this is how the QB desktop version worked and it worked well. PLEASE get an engineer to look at how qb desktop enterprise worked as if qbo worked the same we would have no issues...
Hello there, @Xtown7020.
The effort you exerted in getting into details regarding your concern about creating a union payroll per hour worked is much appreciated. You’re correct that this feature isn’t available in QuickBooks Online (QBO).
I can see how this feature can be beneficial to you and your business. Thus, I recommend you send your suggestions directly to our product development team. We want to comprehend what our customers want for the product. This is to ensure that you’ll have the best experience with the feature available in the product. Here’s how you can send them in QBO:

What you're talking about is union deductions per hours *paid*, not hours worked. QBO just finally added "hours worked", and I know QB desktop did not have an option for hours paid deductions, most of the unions we work with do employee deductions as hours worked or as a percentage of gross. But I do have one union that does hours paid, and I had to do those calcs manually in QBD as well. So I'm just ecstatic that they finally set up deductions per hours worked in QBO so I'm not doing ALL of my employees deductions manually. But if your local unions use hours paid, you are still stuck doing manual calcs.
Hello,
Did this issue get resolved? I am struggling also!
I think there are a lot of issues with the online version, and it really is leaving a lot to be desired. I am having issues with the fact that my work dues are not a true % of gross, because we do pay holiday, vacation and other items "not worked" that the dues % does not apply to, so to say that it is all of gross pay would be incorrect. Likewise, when I look at my "hours worked" with the way that we show OT and DT hours, it inflates what this is, so again, it is an issue with how the deduction is calculated. The desktop version I can setup pay items and deductions and what it is and is not applied to, so it can be adjusted to work in a manner that it is needed. What I can't believe is that this thread is over 4 years old, and most of these items are still not addressed. What is is going to do is drive people to find alternatives away from QBO all together. It's very frustrating, time consuming and I should not need to spend extra hours just to double check that the software is smart enough to do what I need it to do.
Old thread, but has this been resolved? I have Quickbooks enterprise, wanting to switch to online as I don’t like the hosting platform they offer.
but I need to be able to take out dues hourly not percent wise.
Hi DHZ_Electric.
QuickBooks Online Payroll now provides the flexibility to take out dues hourly rather than as a percentage. just select the Per hour work option when you create a deduction item, as shown in the screenshot.
If you have other questions in mind, please don't hesitate to go back to this thread.
If you have pay items that the dues or other benefits you want to accrue applies to certain items but not ALL items, then not, it isn’t resolved. It’s an all or nothing option. So if you were to pay a taxable per-diem, but does don’t apply to it, and you have a gross pay deduction, or you happen to pay vacation, on-call time, or anything else that dues do not apply to, you are screwed with quickbooks half assed online payroll. It is far from union friendly. So much so, I’m in the process of switching my accounting system all together. None of us have time to try and force this to do what it needs. If they had been smart and just transferred the desktop capability to the online platform, all would be right in the world. Instead they made a crap product that may work for the majority of companies, but not if you have union benefits to consider.
I think your help team lacks actual real world knowledge. The answer is you have not addresses the real problem and what people have an issue with isnt really fixed.
