My payroll locked

I'll  make sure you can get back into your payroll account in QuickBooks Online (QBO), @atlanticbuilding.


I can think of two possible reasons your payroll account is locked. You either need to update your billing information for your payroll subscription or you've exceeded the number of password attempts when logging in to QBO.


If you need to update your payroll subscription, you'll have to check your billing information from the Billing & subscription menu. To do this, here's how:


  1. Go to the Gear icon at the top-right of your QuickBooks Online account.
  2. Select Account and settings.
  3. Choose the Billing & subscription menu.
  4. Review your payroll subscription and Resubscribe if necessary.

If you've exceeded the number of password attempts when logging in to QBO, then you can reset your account password. To do this, please check out this article for the step-by-step guide: Reset or change your login information for QuickBooks Online (From QuickBooks Online section).


Then, you can perform some troubleshooting steps. A payroll error can sometimes be caused by the browser's collection of data over time from frequent page visits. To isolate this matter, you can perform some troubleshooting steps.


You can start by pulling up your QuickBooks Online (QBO) account using a private browser (incognito). Here's how:


  • Press Ctrl Shift (Google Chrome)
  • Ctrl Shift (Firefox)
  • Control Option (Safari)


Once signed in, go ahead and access your payroll account. If you're able to do so, return to your default browser and clear its cache. This will refresh the system and remove older data that causes viewing and performance issues. However, if this matter continues, I'd recommend using other supported browsers.
