When setting up payroll in QuickBooks Desktop, there are things needed. One of those are your Tax information in which FEIN and state agency ID numbers are included. You'll need a unique ID numbers from the IRS and state agencies for you to file and pay taxes.

Welcome, @jlor . If you use any of your funds to pay they client taxes you definitely need a FEIN and to apply with the taxing authorities as a payroll provider. If you pay from their bank accounts - or give them a printout of what they should pay, then you possibly can get by with your SS#, although becoming an LLC to protect your assets from errors and omissions should be on your radar

Thank you John,  I think ill open an LLC as sole proprietor.

John,  ill be providing accounting services for about 16 business clients, they all file IRS form 1120S.

Ill be doing their quarterly filings of state forms and 941 forms, as well yearly 940 forms and provide employees with their w2 and 1099 forms, then report to the IRS and SSA forms w3/1099.  I file these by paper.  All I need is a program that will allow me to complete these forms and keep payroll records for client's employees.
