I have used QB now for 30 years. I have never been as frustrated with the product as I have been the past two years. Today pushed me over the top.
Today, I had a new client to run payroll for. I went to set them up on auto deposit. This is a process I am super familiar with and have done many times. When I click on Direct Deposit to enter an employee’s bank account information I get taken to a screen that says "You are set up for Direct Deposit"!!!! In short, I can't progress to the correct screen to enter the employee’s info. I have closed the program and rebooted, etc. This company has totally imploded in the last few years. I am looking for a different provider at this point. Very disgusted.

Which QB Desktop year version?
Is your Enhanced Payroll subscription active?
Hello there, Arnold. We'll point you in the right direction to get your current QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) subscription.
Before anything else, please know this isn't the experience we'd want you to have when using the program.
Let's make sure your QuickBooks Desktop is active and updated to the latest release.
If all the details are active and up-to-date, I recommend contacting our phone or chat support team for QuickBooks Desktop. They can provide further assistance and check on your account to ensure that the status is set back to active, allowing you to resume working in your company file.
Here's how:
To obtain their contact details, please refer to this article: Contact QuickBooks Desktop Support.

The OP didn't ask about QuickBooks Online. Did you even read the question?
2023 QB Desktop.
Yes, I have an active payroll subscription.
I can image thousands of QB customers using this feature to do their clent's payroll and get this message. What a disaster.
Like most CPA's I am not remotely interested in the "Online version of QB" It is a horrible product with very limited reporting capabilities.
