I have an employee who recently moved to the U.S. Virgin Islands and I've talked with Assisted Payroll and they won't allow me to select <none> for state worked and state withholding. I'm wondering what needs to happen either from my employees side or my side, to make sure there isn't false state reporting. I can set the employee to exempt in the state she previously lived, but then there are additional state taxes that are being withheld in the "other" tab. Not to mention, they obviously aren't in that state anymore.
I'm curious if anyone else is using assisted payroll and has an employee that is in the U.S. Virgin Islands and how you are handling that.
Hello there, @CQLUser_01.
I can help share information about setting up your employee's state tax.
To set up tax for employees who moved to US Virgin Island, I recommend consulting an accountant to check if you can set it to Do Not Withhold or Exempt. This way, you can avoid messing up your tax compliance.
Also, you can reach out to our Assisted Payroll support team. They are the best team in QuickBooks to give you advice about setting this up.
Here's how:
I'm also adding this article to check for more information about Tax Compliance: Payroll Tax Compliance Links.
Here is another article you can refer to in setting up employees and Payroll Taxes: Set up employees and payroll taxes in a new state.
Feel welcome to send a reply if you have additional questions about Payroll Taxes. Have a great day!
Ethel,
I just got off a 3 hour call with QB Assisted Payroll Support and the definitive answer was that we could not eliminate a state or set it to <none> (the preferred). We can set it to exempt. But there are other state taxes that are being held and would need QB to disable them for this person. So, I HAVE to associate the person to a US state. The QB Accountant I have, has not done a US Virgin Islands person before, so I'm asking the community in the event someone else has done this.
Any thoughts on my reply? The additional State taxes?
