Bonus on payroll check

Good morning,

I forgot to delete a bonus off this past payroll check (paid it on the previous check).  I've already paid the payroll taxes which included this extra bonus.  What's the best way to correct and reissue the check?  What happens with the taxes?

Thank you!

Bonus on payroll check

Hi there, @calicoellie.

I appreciate you giving us an update about your concern. Allow me to share some clarifications about this.

You're on the right track on deleting the check. The next thing you'll need to do is to recreate the check without the bonus item. Once done, the taxes from the bonus item will be tagged as over-payment that can be used on your next payroll run. To view how much is overpaid you can check the Payroll Liability Balances report.

To do that:

  1. Click on Reports at the top.
  2. Select on Employees and Payroll.
  3. Choose Payroll Liability Balances.
  4. Make sure to filter the correct dates and click on refresh.

However, if you need additional assistance with this concern, feel free to reach out to our Customer Care Team.

To reach them:

  1. In your browser, navigate to https://help.quickbooks.intuit.com/en_US/contact.
  2. Choose QuickBooks Desktop.

This should get you up and running. Please let me know if there's anything else you need. I'll be here to help you out. Have a good one!

Bonus on payroll check

Hi there, @calicoellie.

Thanks for posting your concern in the Community space. I can help you correct the payroll with undeleted bonus and paid payroll taxes.

It's best to create a payroll liability adjustment since you already paid the taxes for the check which included the extra bonus to be deleted.

Here's how:

  1. Go to Employees menu.
  2. Select Payroll Taxes and Liabilities.
  3. Click Adjust Payroll Liabilities.
  4. Supply Date and Effective Date.
  5. Choose between Company and Employee adjustment.
  6. In the Taxes and Liabilities table, enter all necessary information.
  7. Then, click the Accounts Affected button to select where this adjustment will affect.
  8. Click OK.
  9. In the adjustment window, click OK to save adjustment.

For more information and reminders in creating a payroll liability adjustment, just refer to this article: https://community.intuit.com/articles/1762814.

To check taxes being withheld, you may pull up the Payroll Summary Report.

Once done, taxes will show up on the form for the next filing an overpaid amount. You'll have the option to ask refund from the government or apply the credit to the next return.

This information should correct your taxes and payroll in QuickBooks. Keep me posted on this by leaving a comment below. I'll be around if you have other questions. Have a nice day!
