Can I e-file a 1099-NEC for a contractor who lives overseas? The address field says invalid.

It can be done, as there is a location in the eFile format for foreign addresses.

But, it can't be done through QuickBooks 'cause Intuit doesn't think it's important to support foreign addresses.

Any suggestions what to do?  I have a contractor with a US SSN, but she moved to Canada during covid.  QBO won't take a non-US address.

Hello there, @Pchiu1.

When a contractor moved to other countries (i.e., Canada), you'll have to verify with the IRS what's the right action you need to take. This is because you may need to manually file a 1099 form from the time that the contractor lived in the US. Then, they may also require you to file other sets of special forms to complete the process.

You can use this link to contact the IRS: The IRS Help Desk.

I'm also adding this article to learn more about filing 1099 forms: 1099 FAQs. It includes answers to the most frequently asked questions about 1099-NEC, 1099-MISC, and 1099-K forms.

Same problem here as well.  The contractor is a citizen of the US AND a citizen and resident of Canada.  QBO says  I have to verify address and won't let me e-file.  Why Intuit, WHY?

Please tell us what to do.  The form is ready to file.  QBO workflow will not let me file.  The individual is a resident and citizen of Canada and a citizen of the US.  She needs a 1099NEC.

It's nice to see you joining this thread, mbcecac1.

I understand how important to file a form within your QuickBooks company. We should use the correct address for the appropriate form you tried to file.

You need to issue the 1099-MISC form and Canadian Form T4A, depending on the situation. As advised, we'll need to contact IRS since we need further guidance when filing forms for a worker who's a citizen of the US and Canada. Also, they'll help you throughout the process and ensure to accomplish it in no time.

We can use this article to learn more about filing 1099. It also provides details about the form 1099 and Canadian form: What’s the Difference Between U.S. Form 1099-MISC and Canadian Form T4A?

I'd recommend following the flow given in the articles below. They provide details about setting up contractors and tracking payments to generate the 1099 form.

Feel free to post again if you have concerns. I'll be around to help in any way that I can. Stay safe.

The question isn't how to track, set vendors up, etc. It's that Canada has a 6-digit, alphanumeric zip code, and Intuit's online forms accept only 5 numeric digits. I can and have been forced, for years, to print out the single 1099-NEC (Formerly MISC) to the lone vendor I have in Canada. Is there some way to get your 1099-NEC mailed to an address in Canada? Even if we skip the zip code...?
I've been buying the smallest package of 1099-NECs I can (~$60.00), only to throw most of them away.

Hello there, @Lance2. I'll share some insights about filing forms for foreign countries in QuickBooks Online (QBO).

I recognize the convenience of filing a 1099-NEC form for your Canadian vendor in your QBO account. However, the option to submit the form by bypassing the zip code requirement is currently unavailable.

At this time, you'll have to file the 1099-NEC form directly with the IRS and manually mail the form to your vendor. You can also contact the IRS for other documents you need to submit.

While this feature is unavailable, I recommend sending your feedback to our Product Development Team so they can review it and consider implementing it in the future. Here's how:

  1. Go to the Gear icon at the top.
  2. Select Feedback.
  3. Enter your comments or product suggestions.
  4. Then select Next to submit feedback.

You'll want to visit this article for more details and differentiation between the 1099 form and the Canadian form: What’s the Difference Between U.S. Form 1099-MISC and Canadian Form T4A?

Additionally, you can check out these resources that'll help you determine which contractors need 1099s and learn more about the form:
