Can you map different earnings to different classes?

In the QB Desktop, you can map each earning to different classes. Can this be done in QBO payroll? It seems like only employees can be mapped to class?

We need to allocate one employee's salary to three different classes.

Can you map different earnings to different classes?

Hey there, PSconsulting. Allow me to share some information regarding allocating salaries to different classes in QuickBooks Online.

I know how important it is to allocate an employee's salary to three different classes, however, the option to do so is currently unavailable. You can only assign one class per employee in QuickBooks Online.

Here's how:

  1. Click the Gear icon at the upper right corner and choose Payroll Settings.
  2. Go to the Preferences section.
  3. From the Accounting Preferences, scroll down to the Classes section.
  4. Choose I use different classes for different employees option.
  5. Tap OK.
  6. Assign a Class for each employee by clicking the drop-down arrow.
  7. Select a Class from the List.
  8. Hit OK.

I'd also suggest submitting feedback within your QuickBooks Online (QBO) account. This way, it goes to our product developers to help improve your experience while utilizing the program. See the steps below:

  1. Go to the Gear icon at the upper right and select Feedback under Profile.
  2. Enter your comments or product suggestions. You can also attach a screenshot or file to combine them all.
  3. Click Next.

  4. You'll be provided a list of suggested help articles related to your comments. You can read through them or choose Skip and send message.
  5. Select the appropriate category from the drop-down menu.
  6. Tap Send message.

I'll be leaving you the links below. These will provide you with more information on how class tracking works as well as tips on how to manage your payroll preferences in QuickBooks Online:

I want to make sure you're all set, and I'm here if you need further guidance. Have a great day! All the best.

Can you map different earnings to different classes?

Hi, Rose!

I am using QBO, but I do not see that kind of preferences screen you are seeing when you open it. this is what I see under payroll settings.

We only have two employees, but we are a Not for Profit, so classes are important! :-)

Thanks for joining in the thread, polishcat.

I'll make sure you can assign classes to your employees in QuickBooks Online.

The information provided above was based on the old payroll system. You likely have a view of our new payroll settings that's why unable to see the option. I have the steps to allocate classes to your employees in QuickBooks Online.

Before proceeding, please ensure to turn on the Class feature under the Account and settings

Step 1: Turn on class tracking.

  1. Go to Settings , then Account and Settings.
  2. Select Advanced, then click the Categories section to edit.
  3. Check Track classes.
  4. Check the option that says Warn me when a transaction isn't assigned a class. This is optional, but it's good to turn on, so when you look at reports, you know everything got classified.
  5. Under Assign classes, choose either One to entire transaction or One to each row in transaction.*
  6. Hit Save, then Done.

Step 2: Assign class to the employee.

  1. Go to Settings , the Payroll Settings.
  2. Scroll down at the bottom, then click the Edit icon under the Accounting section.
  3. In the Accounting preferences window, hit the Edit icon under the Class Tracking area.
  4. Choose either I use the same classes for all employees or I use different classes for different employees.
  5. Enter class in the Class column.
  6. Click Continue, then Done.
