Does QBO have an App specific to how Nonprofits manage payroll?

Hello All,

 

501 Commons is a nonprofit that works solely w/ other nonprofits. We have a development group that builds a lot of functionality for Salesforce using the Salesforce Nonprofit Success Pack. The Nonprofit success pack in Salesforce is all about building a layer on Salesforce specifically designed for how nonprofits use CRMs.

 

501 Commons has an accounting group where we only work w/ QuickBooks and traditionally most of our clients are QB Desktop. Recently based on Covid-19 and before we are seeing a shift to cloud based accounting. We have functionality in the Desktop that isn't available in QBO related to payroll so we are losing clients to other online accounting solutions that have specific nonprofit functionality in their online solutions.

 

Does anyone know if QBO is working on nonprofit specific payroll issues or a solution out their to help w/ payroll management for nonprofits?

 

We want to do an exhaustive search before building a custom nonprofit app for QBO.

 

Description of the problem related to Payroll management for Nonprofits in QBO vs Desktop

 

Class in QB - determines functional expenses, I-90 (Admin, Program, Fundraising, Management)

***Example Employee salaries across these functional expenses

Ideally like to do this every payroll vs yearly (at least yearly is required for I-90)

 

Desktop you can do the allocations on each employee w/ multiple classes - run payroll and automatically does the functional expenses.

QBO - only allows 1 class (e.g., Admin, Program, ..) then do a journal entry for everything beyond the single class. Can template the journal entries - still have to hand key the numbers. Salary is easier but hourly is a pain because everything is changing.

The other option is do payroll in ADP, Paychecks, etc.. and import into QBO - outside payroll isn't as easy to see the info across systems.

Less painful using a 3rd party payroll vs managing internally payroll in QBO because options to sync but can still be challenging to sync and see data across the board.

Hey there, @501 Commons - Nonprofit.

 

At the moment, not all payroll functions in the Desktop version are available in the online version. As you pointed out, Desktop offers class tracking for an employee while QBO does not.
 

While we can't specifically tell you if the same functions will be added in the future, you can look for third-party apps that can be integrated with QBO. More details about using QBO for Non-profit organizations are discussed here: How Nonprofit Organizations Use QuickBooks Online.
