If an employee left the organization and is now re-hired, do I enter them as a whole new person, or can the original termination date be cancelled like they never left?
It's best to use the original employee so you don't have two employee records for one person, which can lead to various issues.
To start paying them again, remove the termination date and change any other status fields as needed.

Good afternoon,
I followed the steps to re hire an employee. I have a question in regards to the Hire Date. It remains the same as the original date. Should I change his hire date to the current one and put his old hire date as Original Hire Date ?
Thank you
It's great to hear about having your employee back in your business, @bills123.
When rehiring your employee in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT), let's ensure to make them active first before making any changes. To guarantee your employee's taxes are calculated accurately, I'd suggest consulting with the IRS or an accountant.
Since their employment status will affect how the taxes are calculated and their submission to the IRS, it is best to consult with an accountant to guide you about your concern.
Once everything looks good, you might want to invite your employee to QuickBooks Workforce to view their pay stubs, refer to this article: Invite your employees to QuickBooks Workforce to see pay stubs and W-2s, and more.

That answered your question??? HOW???
Their response didn't even mention Hire date or Original Hire date.
Was SOOOO hoping the answer was there.
Hello, @neilpipper.
We'd love to help you achieve your goal, but I just need more information to help me get on the same page. Would you mind telling me more about your concern? This way, I can provide you with an accurate resolution.
I appreciate any details you can provide. I'm looking forward to your reply.
When rehiring an employee in QBD it has the "hire date" field grayed out with the previous hire date. You can change the "original hire date" field. However, I would expect it to be the opposite. Isn't the "original hired date" the first date a person was originally hired the first time and the "hire date" the date they rehired? Need clarification. Thank you.
Yes, you're right, lmbart. I've come to share information to help clear some of your confusion.
When rehiring an employee in QuickBooks Desktop, you'll want to ensure all data entered from the Termination tab of your employee's profile are cleared out. This will help reinstate your terminated employee from your file. Then, enter the recent rehired date for the employee from the Hire date field, and keep the Original Hired date section as this states the original date when your employee was originally hired for the first time.
To do that:
However, if the Hire date field is still greyed out after ensuring the steps above, you'll want to consider using the QuickBooks Tool Hub to resolve common issues and errors in your desktop file. Beforehand, let's ensure you've downloaded your QuickBooks Desktop account to its latest release.
Once done, we can now download and install QuickBooks Tool Hub. Here's how:
For additional information, you can check out this reference: Fix common problems and errors with the QuickBooks Desktop Tool Hub.
I'm also sharing this helpful resource to help you invite your employee to access their pay stubs and W2s: Invite your employees to QuickBooks Workforce to see pay stubs and W-2s if you use QuickBooks Deskto.... You'll need to make sure the employee is active before inviting them.
Let us know how things worked for you, lmbart. If you require additional assistance with any other area, please don't hesitate to reply in the comments below. We'll be around to help you further. Have a good one!
The problem is not an error for a tool to fix. It is the way the new version/update has been made. We cannot change the Hire Date. We are in construction, and we have employees that come and go multiple times. This causes an incorrect hire date when I run an employee report. It shows Hire Date, which is old. I hope this gets fixed.
RE: However, I would expect it to be the opposite. Isn't the "original hired date" the first date a person was originally hired the first time and the "hire date" the date they rehired? Need clarification.
Yes, that is correct. The Original Hire Date is an HR concept that represents the first time the employee was hired, used in some HR reporting. The Hire Date is the most recent hire date, the re-hire date. You should be able to change both dates at any time, either to fix them, or when the employee is re-hired after their original hire date.
It looks like Quickbooks must have released an update which fixed the issue.
I just updated QB with the latest, critical update. There has been no change to this issue. With repeat employees, this really causes an issue. I need the current hire dates to show in the reports. I hope QB unlocks the employment dates.
Are you using QuickBooks 2022 or another version year?
Either way, what is your version and release, as seen at the top of the F2 window?

Attached is a screen shot of what I have in my version. Before the "Original Hire" was not changeable but the "Hire Date" was. A few weeks ago it updated and there is a new screen called "Required Info". That screen has the hire date, which pre-fills the "Employment Info" "Hire Date" field.
Yea, it's stupid, but at least now you know how to edit it.
The problem comes in when we rehire someone. The hire date is fixed on the last employment and that is what I need to change.

Hi DGrimes,
Let's modify the rehire date on the Payroll Setup page. I'm here to guide you through the steps so you can continue on your payroll tasks.
Here's how:
When you're ready to pay the newly rehired employee, you can check these articles as your guide:
You can always post in the forum whenever you have payroll concerns if you need help managing your employees.
RE: The problem comes in when we rehire someone. The hire date is fixed on the last employment and that is what I need to change.
You can change it but for some mysterious reason you have to change it on the stupid new "Required Info" tab, where it is repeated.
Thanks. Going to that "Required info" tab worked, and did the method "Payroll Setup" method mentioned above, but "Required info" is a lot faster and easier.
Hi,
I've the same question about how to change the Hire Date to the Re-Hire date and move the date currently in "Hire Date" to "Original Hire Date" field.
Thank you!
Jane
