Currently, the option to sort the total amount of paychecks by pay period is unavailable in the payroll reports of QuickBooks Online. I understand how this feature would help you in managing your business finances. Please know that your voice will us to stay in tune with what our customers need and want. At times, we roll up product enhancements based on customer's request.
Rest assured, I'll be taking this as a feedback and add your vote to it. This way, it might be given a chance to be added to our next updates.

Is there any update to this? Employees that submit hours late are often paid a few weeks after the pay period. If we can only sort by pay date, it doesn't enable us to analyze their hours.
Consider this another vote for adding that feature.

I can see how this specific update is beneficial to you and to other users, but the feature you want is unavailable in QuickBooks Online (QBO). My colleagues have provided the workarounds above.

The ability to sort or filter by pay date is not helpful, but I can get done what I need by exporting it to excel. It's a tedious workaround, but it does the job.
