How do I remove inactive states from payroll. The buttons listed in the instructions are missing, as usual with this product...

Let me help you with that, david334.

First, I'd like to know what buttons you're referring to? If those buttons exist in your previous QuickBooks navigation, there maybe be too many files in your cache storage that are causing unusual behavior.

You can use a private browser to help QuickBooks perform efficiently. Here's how:

Access QuickBooks in an incognito window:

  • Ctrl + Shift + N for Google Chrome
  • Ctrl + Shift + P for Firefox & Microsoft Edge
  • Command + Shift + N for Safari

Then, export the report again using this mode and review the numbers. If it works, you can go back to your original browser. Then, clear the cache. It lets your browser start fresh. If it persists, you can use compatible browsers with QBO.

To remove the state, you need to inactivate them by going to the Payroll Settings.

  1. Go to the Gear icon, then choose Payroll Settings.
  2. Under Company and Account, click Work Locations.
  3. Select the exact state, then mark the Inactive checkbox.
  4. Hit Save.

You can read through these articles to see all the available payroll reports in QBO: Run payroll reports.

Please add another post to what specific buttons you're referring to. The Community is always here to help if you need further assistance, david334. Take care!

You are the one who referred to the buttons in your help docs.  None of the buttons you describe in those docs, not the buttons you describe here, are available on my interface.  They used to be, but now a popup window just comes up with the individual states, and the location interfaces are no  longer available, as described in the help docs.  I have no idea what you are talking about when it comes to reports, I did not ask about reports.

Hi there, @david334.

Do you mind sharing the help article link you're referring to? This way, I'm able to identify what QuickBooks version it is for.

Looking forward for your response.

Thanks for the help article link you've provided above, @david334. With that, I'm able to give you the info you need and guide you on the actions you need to help inactivate states from your payroll in QuickBooks Online (QBO).

Based on your description above, I can tell that you're already utilizing the new Payroll Settings interface. Once you access it from the Gear icon, it'll pop up with the individual states. Please see the screenshot below for your reference.

With the new and upgraded Payroll Settings, the option to inactivate a state from payroll is unavailable. You'll have to reach out to our Payroll Care team to do it on your behalf. This is to make sure that your payroll data is accurate, secure, and updated. To do this, here's how:

  1. Sign in to your QBO company.
  2. Go to the Help (?) menu.
  3. Select the Search tab.
  4. Click the Contact Us button.
  5. Enter a brief description of your concern in the What can we help you with? field.
  6. Select Continue.
  7. Choose a way to connect with us (Send a message or Get a callback).

Also, there are several payroll reports you can use to view useful information about your business's finances and employees in QBO. For the complete list and guide on how you can access and customize them, I'd recommend checking out this article: Run payroll reports.

Please don't hesitate to let me know in the comments if you have other payroll concerns and managing work locations for employees in QBO Payroll. I'll gladly help. Take care, and I wish you continued success, @david334
