incorrect coding of salaries, wages, tips and payroll taxes

I have posted after the fact payroll for Month of July, 2020 in QB desktop pro 2019.  The payroll consists of officer salary, salaries, tips in and tips out.  When I run the P & L to verify coding, tips show up as wages and all else shows up and payroll taxes.  What went wrong?

Thanks for reaching out, patriotjames.

The coding that shows on your P&L depends on how you set up the payroll items and what account you used when setting up those items. You'll want to verify them and modify them if necessary. Here's how:

  1. Go to the Lists menu and select Payroll Item List.
  2. In the Payroll Item drop-down arrow, select Edit Payroll Item.
  3. Follow on-screen instructions.

Still looking for the setuup for after the fact payroll.  I went back though all of the items, and they seem to be set correctly.  However, there does seem to be another way to set up posting, showing the net payroll check charged to payroll clearing (liability account) instead of directly to the bank account.  Then, when disbursements are entered, the check amount are charged to the liability account and bank is credited.  I have not been able to find that example in my QB Desktop Pro 2019.

Thanks for coming back, patriotjames.

At this time, editing the payroll item is the available way to set up posting account in QuickBooks Desktop. You can refer to GlinetteC's answer for the steps on how to do this.

Here's an article that shares instructions on how to correct payroll items on paychecks: Edit payroll items used on paychecks.
