Is the terminate status used for both if an employee quits or is fired?

Hi there, @dianna5.

I hope you’re having a great day. I’m happy to provide a little more information about the Terminated status.

You have to use this status for an employee you aren't expecting to rehire, including discharge, layoff, or resignation. Employees' records will still be available, and you can change their status back to active at any time. Here’s an article for more information about this: Terminate or Change Your Employee's Status on Payroll.

Additionally, if you terminate an employee for any reason, you must pay them for all time owed. How and what you pay depends on the agreement you have with your employees.

If you have any additional questions about employment status or anything else, please feel free to reach out. I’m happy to help anytime.

The employee was the only paid employee. We had. That person understands and doesn't have a problem with being terminated. I need I need to know how to get out of payroll for bookkeeping and for QuickBooks online. Since I have no other employees I don't see the point of paying you money.

We have terminated our only employee. The last paycheck was last month. What we need to do now is to unapply to QuickBooks online so we are not charged money because we're not paying anybody. I would like to have it completely removed. I probably need to talk to a human. I would appreciate it.

We recognize the importance of money in business, LevelFour. I want to ensure you are only using the services you really need, LevelFour. Let's navigate to the Subscriptions and billing section to cancel your payroll.

Before we start, I recommend that you export and save copies of your reports. Keep in mind you'll retain access to your payroll data for one year following the cancellation of your subscription. Make sure all the tasks outlined below are completed before canceling the account:

  • Complete and process your final payroll
  • Print necessary payroll reports

If you handle your own taxes, settle any unpaid tax deposits and file any outstanding annual or quarterly forms. If you have a full service payroll plan, keep your bank account open until we debit and pay your tax liabilities. These liabilities, including annual ones, will be paid at the time we process your cancelation form. You will get an email confirmation within 3 business days after we review your cancellation request and another email when your cancellation is complete.

When you're ready, follow these steps to unscribe to the payroll service:

  1. Log in to QuickBooks Online (QBO) as the master or company administrator.
  2. Navigate to the Gear ⚙ icon and  select Subscriptions and billing
  3. This action will open a screen that shows your QBO products.
  4. From there, select your payroll product and click the Cancel link.
  5. On the Cancel QuickBooks Online Payroll screen, click the Continue to cancel button.

Refer to this resource for an in-depth explanation of the process: Cancel Your QuickBooks Payroll Subscription.

Moreover, printing your payroll reports is a great way to keep a record of your employees' taxes, deductions, contributions, and other payroll items. If you wish to utilize the payroll feature in the future, click this link to renew your account: Reactivate your QuickBooks Payroll subscription.

Feel free to visit the Community again if you have other payroll concerns or questions managing your billing and subscription. We'll get back to provide the help you need.
