QBDT Direct Deposit per paycheck fee increasing from $1.75 per check to $4.00 per check

I just received an email stating the direct deposit fee was changing to $4.00 per pay check in January 2024.

That is up from $1.75 per check.

WOW that's over 125% increase.

Ridiculous.

I understand the importance of every penny that you save is more than what you earn. I'll provide some information on why an increase is happening, Madeleine.

Typically, the price increase is required to match higher operating costs while enabling us to continue enhancing the service and adding new features to our product.

This increase impacts Enhanced Payroll for Accountants when using direct deposit to pay W-2 employees. For clients on “legacy” Enhanced, Standard, and Basic Payroll plans without monthly per-employee fees, the new fee will apply when paying W-2 employees via direct deposit.

On the other hand, the non-legacy pricing plans charge a base subscription fee and monthly per-employee fee, with no additional charge for direct deposit for W-2 employees, which isn't impacted by the direct deposit increase.

To give you more details about this, you can check out this link to know who is most affected by this: Changes To QuickBooks Desktop Payroll Direct Deposit Fee.

I understand increases but not the % amount of the increase.

Quickbooks is pricing itself out of the market for small employers between the subscription costs etc.

Our firm is looking at other options which is sad since we started the company around Quickbooks in 199 and have been in business for 25 years.  But you are pricing yourselves out and not everyone wants to go to the online version which is all Quickbooks seems to be pushing.

OMG....  I was in shock.  I expected an increase..... soon..... but I agree!   over 125% increase.

It is crazy!

I don't know how many clients I may be able to keep !   I expected maybe to 2.50  even 2.75... but $4.00

Almost all my clients are DD --- and I KNOW they are NOT going to be Happy.

I was also in shock about the rate of increase. Truth is, my clients all use external payroll companies, so the only paycheck I run is my own, in the company file for my own business. For this (Enhanced Payroll) service I paid $381 per year in order to run one paycheck, once a month. I would think that for Pro Advisors at least I could run my own paycheck for free. I cannot simply do this manually because I am a bkpr, not an accountant, and I do not follow tax rate changes. I depend on Intuit to do that for me. And payroll companies want to charge me like $60 or $70 per month for ONE employee so INtuit at $381/year is still a lot cheaper. BUT ... because of this hike in direct deposit which I think just seems extraordinarily steep, I will just print my own paycheck on check stock and will mobile deposit it into my personal account. Will cost me an extra minute a month and an extra day to wait for it to clear. So instead of getting $2.25 extra from me per month, Intuit is losing $1.75. I could see $2.25. Not a hike to $4 in one bite.

I agree.  I know Intuit is greedy but seriously.  I don't think they should even charge $1.75 now $4.00!

As a ProAdvisor I pay extra to be able do payroll for clients; most of whom are small closely held businesses.  I could put them on the online payroll but my understanding is most professionals dislike QBO payroll.  I think I'm stuck this year as I already paid for 2024.  I'll be looking for another service to use for my clients in 2025.  Already I've spent 3 phone conversations and over an hour just trying to get an employee's last name changed...  Intuit time is money.

And I will also be printing my own payroll checks and mobile deposit.

dso0216  I totally agree with you.  I think the increase to $ 4.00 per is being very greedy.  QuickBooks/Intuit is pricing their selves out of business.  I too am looking for another program for 2025.  All my clients are small businesses, and they need to keep their expenses down.  If I find another program to change to, I won't be the only business to change.  Whomever comes up with another program, they are going to be taking away a lot of clients from QuickBooks and Intuit is going to be hurting.

Most of the banks in our area are providing payroll check direct deposit features and I am going to check out what all that involves and the cost.  If it is cheaper than the $4.00 rate, I will more than likely go that route for my clients' direct deposit paychecks.  Therefore, QuickBooks will not be raking in the greedy $4.00 per paycheck from my clientele.  If they would have gone to $2.00 or $2.25, I would stay with QuickBooks Direct Deposit.

I dislike QBO and if anyone calls me for recommendations, I tell them NOT to purchase QBO unless they are just wanting to track their personal checking.

@VBS

For your clients who have employees, you can propose that they upgrade to QB Desktop Enterprise Gold to lower the total cost.

If you are using QB Desktop Pro Plus + QB Desktop Payroll, you can compare with the following table.

Pro+QBD Payroll vs QBD Ent Gold.jpg

Otherwise, you can use QB Desktop with a non-subscription license + a 3rd party payroll app. You can register your payroll expenses manually as JE in QB Desktop.

We have used QB for 16 years for our small business. We also used QB Point of Sale which QB has abandoned requiring us to bring in a new system. I was just about to implement DD when I saw the cost of $4.00/check. Sorry but I will continue to print paper checks for that price. QB has always been mercenary.
