The State of Iowa has Intuit listed as a payroll software provider that is compatible with submitting electronic W-2 report to them. I have Desktop Pro 2018 and Enhanced Payroll for Accountants. I am doing a trial run on submitting the W-2s to the State of Iowa but in the drop down window in the Create State W2 E-file the state of Iowa is not an option. What am I doing wrong? Is there an update coming soon that will have Iowa as an option? Do I have the wrong version of Quickbooks? Am I supposed go somewhere else within the program to create the report? PLEASE HELP!!
Hello RMC83,
In QuickBooks Desktop Payroll, filling of IOWA W-2 form is done manually. You'll need to get the .TXT form and upload it directly to the state website. Year-end forms aren't yet available until January 1st. Please try to pull up the forms on that day. Then, refer to the article for the detailed steps: Iowa State W-2 E-file Help.
Please let us know if you have any questions.
The OPs question is, "I am doing a trial run on submitting the W-2s to the State of Iowa but in the drop down window in the Create State W2 E-file the state of Iowa is not an option. "
Did you answer that question?
Has anyone tried this after January 1st? I uploaded a file today per the instructions but received error messages
Hi there, @laurammenke33.
Thank you for joining on this thread. Allow me to help share some information about the error message you received when uploading the file.
In QuickBooks, we can only generate a .txt file for state W-2. If it's producing an error when uploading to the agency site, I'd suggest contacting the agency first. It could be that your state website requires a different format, so it'd be best to ask for assistance from them.
Let me know how it goes. I'll be on the lookout if you have further questions about your W-2. Have a good one.
Thank you for your response. Upon further review, there was a bad Iowa Withholding permit number in my QB payroll item. After correcting that issue I was able to upload without any problems.
thanks again!

Only produce a txt file? QB produces EFW2 files using the state W-2 feature. The files are tailored to each state per their requirements.
If the file is wrong, that is either a QB bug or user error. Calling the state will not help the Intuit payroll customer create a better file for that state.
