Join nowA Solo 401K is limited to a self-employed business owner with NO full time employees - which O interpret to also mean yourself. You can only,as I understand it, contribute to a Solo 401k if you are a sole proprietor or an LLC NOT ELECTING SUBCHAPTER S TAX TREATMENT - All of this means that unless you are a Subchapter S or an LLC electing to be taxed as a corporation you CANNOT be on your own payroll - thus the exclusion of a Solo 401j (or even a SEP IRA) from options in payroll. Everything you as a self-employed individual contribute is owner equity and the tax treatment happens not in your business but in your 1040
If your situation is different than any I have outlined please elaborate and I may give different advice
Good evening, @lindadanforthagi.
Allow me to provide more information about Solo 401(k)s in QuickBooks Online.
The Solo 401(k) plans are open to sole proprietor businesses whose only employee is a spouse. Partnerships and corporations without employees are also covered under these guidelines. This also means that your income doesn't limit your ability to contribute.
As for setting up the retirement plan in QuickBooks, I recommend reaching out to an accountant. They'll be able to tell you what's best for your business. If you don't have one, you can check our find an accountant page to help you locate one in your area.
You can find more information about the Solo 401(k) plan in this article: Solo 401(k) plans offer advantages for Self-Employed savers.
I'm only a comment away if you have any other questions. Enjoy the rest of your week!
I'm already a sole member LLC and I already have set up (and have been contributing from my business via a paper check) a Solo 401k. When I try to make the deduction via payroll there is no option to select Solo 401k. Seem a glitch in the software to me much like QBO does not seem to really get Sole Member LLC for being exempt from FUTA...it took someone "on the back end" to fix my exemption and now I have to get my FUTA taxes paid via QBO refunded and 940 fixed. I just don't feel like QBO gets sole member LLC. The person I spoke with via phone today couldn't help me and he thought maybe if I posted her someone else would know.
Thanks...a law firm with helped me set up my solo 401k attached to my sole member LLC (they do tax & legal advising) and I've been contributing from my biz via paper check for over a year. (and doing employee match)..but now that I've put my records in QBO there is no choice to select Solo 401k as a qualified retirement plan. I just need to know which selection to pick or get QBO to add it....I can't imagine others haven't needed this so figure one of the other choices is a fit but called by a different name?
