Why will this not go away from my tasks menu on the hompage? Tasks Federal Unemployment (940) payment Pay now 323 days overdue

Hi brian15,

I can help you remove the payroll notification in your Dashboard.

The reason you're seeing it is because there was no 940 tax payment recorded for the prior year. Let's review it first to see the tax liability period by clicking on the notification link in your Dashboard. Record it as historical tax payment (given that it was paid outside QuickBooks).

Here's how:

  1. Click on Taxes in the left navigation tab.
  2. Go to the Payroll Tax Center.
  3. Click on Enter prior tax history
  4. Click on Add Payment.
  5. Select the Tax Type, Liability Period, Payment Date, Notes, and the tax item amount.
  6. Click on OK.

Then, you're all set. Recording tax payments this way won't duplicate any tax entries. When you go to your Dashboard, the tax notification is now gone.

Should need anything else, please post them here.

I have had this same issue so I followed the steps provided.  I started with 8 tax payments on the Task List on the Dashboard.  After entering them I'm down to 3 and those 3 appear on the list for the prior period (because I entered them).  What could I be doing wrong?

Thanks for keeping us posted, kimburry.

I'd be glad to clear this up for you. Allow me to chime in and help you further with entering prior tax payments in QBO.

Let's make sure you enter the correct Payment Date, Tax type and Liability Period (the period that the taxes were accrued). To review the prior payments made, please follow the steps below:

  1. From the left menu, select Taxes.
  2. Choose Payroll Tax.
  3. Select View Tax Payments you have made.
  4. From the drop-down located at the upper right, select Edit.
  5. Make the necessary changes, then choose OK.

This article outlines a detailed information on how to record prior tax payments in QBO: Recording prior tax payments.

In case you need assistance doing this, feel free to reach out to our QuickBooks Payroll Support Team. They'll be able to guide you through the whole process entering prior payments in QBO.

That should do it. Please don't hesitate to ask any follow-up questions about this. I want to make sure you're always taken care of.

If this is done, won't the "View tax payments you have made" option show incorrect information? Will the payment his the general ledger?

Hi there, jimh3,

Yes, the View tax payments you have made section will show the complete information of your payments. However, editing manually recorded payments isn't an option in QuickBooks. You can only delete them.

On the other hand, there was a ticket (INV-14476) created about 940 still showing up on the Dashboard after the tax payment is made. Therefore, your general ledger isn't affected by this.

Our Product Team had resolved this issue. If you're still seeing a due on your Dashboard, I recommend contacting our QuickBooks Online Payroll Team. They have the tool to check and verify your payments to ensure your taxes aren't affected.

Here's how to get in touch with them:

  1. Log in to your QuickBooks account.
  2. Click (?) Help at the right top.
  3. Select Contact Us to connect with a live agent.
  4. Enter a brief discussion of your concern, then click Let's talk.
  5. Choose a way on how to get in touch with them.

Let me know how the call goes by leaving a comment below. I'm always around to help you out.
