If I make ex-employees inactive (that DID work for us in 2024) will QuickBooks still generate a W-2 for them? Or do I have to keep them "active"?
Yes, @WLusk, QuickBooks will still generate a W-2 for an ex-employee even if you make them inactive.
When you make an employee inactive in QuickBooks, they're no longer included in your active payroll list, but their profile and pay records remain in your accounts. Additionally, QuickBooks will still generate a W-2 as long as they have paychecks recorded during the year.

Keep me updated if you have other questions about inactive employees in QuickBooks Desktop Payroll. I'm always around to answer them. Have a great day!
@WLusk QuickBooks Desktop will generate W-2s for all employees that received paychecks dated within the relevant year, regardless of their Active or Inactive status.
So, no worries; all roads lead to the IRS here.

@FishingForAnswers I find it interesting that @MarkAngeloG fixed his 'answer' without comment and without thanking you for pointing our his sloppy blunder. I wonder why he's being so rude.
What did he say? I missed it.
Thank you so much! Understood!
Haha! I should've known! Thank you so much for your help!
