To prevent this from happening again, you can report this incident to Intuit Security Center. Here are the steps to do it:

 

  1. Visit this website: https://security.intuit.com/contact-us.
  2. Click the Contact Us tab.
  3. Find the Report technical support scams box.
  4. Select Report tech support scams.

 

You can save this page as a reference to distinguish official Intuit mail and websites:

 

Identify suspicious activity, phishing scams, and potential fraud.

 

Also, you can contact our support team to secure your account and check everything.

 

To answer your question, @jbd2022, I suggest you log in to your QuickBooks Desktop account and press F2. There, you will be given a path as to where to find your QBDT file.

It's malware that ties itself to your QB folder and starts automatically when you start quickbooks. They have exploited security holes in the software and were able to generate these fake error messages.

 

The files you want to look for below, mine were in Users/Public/Documents/Windows and Users/Public/Documents/Intuit

 

look for: 90s.rtf , err.html , QuickbooksDownloader.exe IntuitDownloadManager.exe

WARNING SCAM SUPPORT HELP WARNING

OK, two times in the past two years, QB has called and told me my updates weren't working.  Just last night they called again and they sent me to another group of people (Data Service Solutions) and they told me that my data was corrupted and needed to be fixed.  They gave me an option of 1 year for $5,900 or 3 years for $9,900.  First of all I had no idea that my data was corrupted, everything was working fine.  They did show me that my updates weren't being taken.  I went with just a one time fix for $4,800, not knowing what was involved.  They went on my computer from remote and did some stuff with my files.  They downloaded my quickbooks again and did a repair.  All in all it took about 3 hours.  When he was finished I questioned why this cost so much.  I believe it was just labor involved and really am upset that they would need to charge this much for a small fix.  Has anyone else had this problem?  How many more times will it happen?  I would like to hear from Quickbooks to justify this cost.

There have been more bogus websites in recent years that sell Intuit products and services while impersonating Intuit websites.

 

The technical help of some kind is available for all Intuit products. The phone numbers you need to call us are listed on our help pages. The security of our clients is a top priority for QuickBooks. I recommend contacting our Customer Support Team. One of our staff members can access your account in a secure setting and further look into if this process and transaction are legitimate. Aside from that, they can provide more details regarding the charges.

I have a call in to discuss with Quickbooks, but I also did this one other time, when QB actually sent me to Data 
Service Solution to get my files fixed.  I called into QB and they referred me.  It cost me about $5000.  So yesterday I get a call (I'm assuming it's from QB (how do I know though)) for the same reason.  I do the same thing that I did a year ago so assume it's legit.  How does this group if it's not QB know all my account information?

@daveanthes   One thing that MOST Intuit team members will tell you is that QB will NEVER contact you regarding your account, including but not limited to taking payments for anything. 

There are a good number of threads throughout this community that talk about it.  

 

You might want to do better research, for the sake of your company.

This happened to me about 3 years ago and then it stopped.  It is possible that I allowed the person access to my computer - then they ran all sorts of strange looking diagnostics.  Nothing has happened since then.  Is there a cause for concern at this point?  I am the OP.

I had the exact experience from a website www.qbosolutions.ca.  I had googled a phone number to quickbooks to ask about a Visa charge and how i had not received  my newest version of quickbooks.  I thought i was calling quickbooks.  Website looked like quickbooks.   I asked my questions and they said they needed to get on my computer through team viewer, and quickly advised that i had not received my updated version because my database was corrupt.  That it was at 43% and if it got to 50% i would loose all my data.  That the reason i hadn't received my updated version was because of the corruption and unable to sync with quickbooks.  Based on my file size they quoted $1800-$2200 to repair it .... i asked for email clarification as i didn't understand what the reall problem was, but he said he couldn't send me an email.  He showed me lots of errors on my computer and claimed they were quickbooks errors.   I was not comfortable with any of what he was selling.  Told him i would call him back once i reviewed.  I googled Quickbooks database corruption and right away found out it was a scam.

was contacted by a third-party QuickBooks support that represented themselves as QuickBooks.  The told my my support was running out and I need to pay the annual fee.  Seemed kind of fishy.  I get support directly from QuickBooks with my subscription.  I called them back and they agreed to refund my CC. Problem is that I am a busy business owner and because they seemed to have all my QuickBooks information i just believed them. The charge was $499.99.  They gave me a number to contact them with.  I had been just contacting my QuickBooks help through the QB program.  I think QB should be helping to identify this kind of scam.  I don't know if they are real or not.  Perhaps if you do not renew QB and are using an old edition they work?  I just don't know.  I do know that I gave them $499.99 because the represented themselves as QB proper.  This is a misrepresentation and Intuit should be chasing them down and putting a stop to this scam.  If their operator's have realized that they can tell a quick lie and take business owners for $500 seems like Intuit should warn the QB users.

There's a good chance that these scammers are getting their information directly from QB employees.

How else would they get that info? 

 

It WAS a scam call.  You should contact your bank and talk to them about it being fraudulent charges due to scam.

I did talk to the CC company.  The refund came in within minutes.  It happened while I was talking to them.  Because they had refunded immediately, the CC said there was no harm.  It was the quickest I have ever received a refund.   They may be a legitimate support company. My customer number was over 20,000.  Multiply that by $500 a year.  Wow!  That is a pretty sweet deal.  It appears they certainly don't want to jeopardize their play.  Some of the stuff I read from other customers were real horror stories.  They had let them into their computer and were then told that they had unrelated problems and would have to pay more. I believe Intuit should be monitoring this stuff and at least send out a buyer beware message.
