To add some additional information to my initial post. On a related note, I have tried to add two third party application for time tracking (eBillity and Minute7). Both of these integrate time to QuickBooks such that it is available to pull onto an invoice and shows up in time reports. However, if I click the link in the report to edit the Time Entry, I get a "Something happened on our end" error message. So this is a related problem.
I appreciate you for sharing your opinion, @nedmiles, @nedmiles1.
I'd be glad to provide you some details about entering weekly timesheet in QuickBooks Online (QBO).
There's no need to upgrade your QBO Essentials to Plus or subscribe to payroll. Even without doing any of this, you can still enter and track the time of your employees.
QBO release an update where it replaces the Single Time Activity and Weekly TimeSheet to Time Entry. Though it requires extra clicks, it still the same as entering a weekly timesheet.
You can go to the + New menu to access Time Entry or click Time from the left menu and select Time Entries. From there, you can enter and track your employees' time. You can also check this article for more details: Track and manage timesheets in QuickBooks Online.
Though this update is yet to be available to some users, rest assured, our Product team is working 24/7 to have this roll out to all QBO companies. Additionally, you have the option to submit your feedback to them. This way, they can take a look and review it. They are always open to any suggestions and opinions as this can help us improve QuickBooks.
Moreover, you'll want to visit our QuickBooks Blog page to stay current on any news and updates about QuickBooks. You also get to know what our engineers are currently working on to improve QBO.
With regards to the error message you've encountered on your end, we currently working to fix this issue. We recently received reports were some users are unable to unbilled time and edit time entry. In the meantime, you'll want to create a Journal Entry (JE) to offset the transactions.
With this, I recommend working with your accountant so you'll be guided on what account to use. If you don't have one, you can visit our ProAdvisor page and look for one from there.
I'd also encourage you to contact our Support team. This way, you'll be added to the list (INV-59172) of affected users and be notified via email of any updates.
Once everything is settled, you'll want to utilize this link for guidance: Process or run payroll. It consists of steps on how to run your payroll seamlessly.
You can always reach out to me again if you have other questions about tracking time in QBO. I'll be here to back you up anytime. Keep safe!
Thanks for the reply. So you are saying that there is an update to QuickBooks Online that only some users can see and not others? Interestingly, I just set up a new trial account yesterday under a different email address and I see "Single Time Activity" and "Weekly Timesheet" in this new account. It is only this wholesale account that is showing only "Time Entry".
According to what you mentioned, the view that only show "Time Entry" is the new version, correct? This is odd as it is much more cumbersome than the "old way" of having weekly timesheets. Each day has to be entered separately and all attributes (client, service, billable, etc.) have to be re-entered each time. This is less productive and prone to mistakes. Is there an explanation here.
Finally, you mentioned the ability to edit unbilled time was a known issues that was being looked into? Interestingly, the time entries I cannot edit were synced over from a third party application called Minute7 (this ones I created manually in QuickBooks could be edited fine). I also connected Minute7 with my newer trial account (the one that still shows "Single Time Activity" and "Weekly Timesheet") and was able to edit those fine in QuickBooks.
Any further thoughts you have would be appreciated.
Hi there nedmiles1
Thanks for getting back to us.
I know how it can be difficult be to lose a feature that you’ve come to rely on, however, it’s not something we plan to completely remove. Let me give you a bit more context on why we made that change and how it will hopefully benefit you in the long run.
Based on the research conducted, we found out that entering time in QuickBooks Online is not unified. QBO time shows differently than QuickBooks time. To help small business owners efficiently manage their time entries, we've launched the new Time Entry feature and Time Center menu. Feel free to read this article for more details: Track and manage timesheets.
Please know we're still rolling out this update in batches to all our US customers. You may notice that some QuickBooks companies are still using the old option of entering timesheets.
I understand that you're more comfortable using the old interface. You'll want to send your feedback to our Product Development Team to help improve your QuickBooks experience.
With regard to the uneditable time entries, you can perform some basic troubleshooting steps to isolate this issue. It could be that the accumulated cache in the browser is the root cause of this unusual behavior.
Start by accessing your QBO account in a private or incognito window. Please refer to the shortcut keys I've listed below:
Once you're in, open the unbilled time and then try editing the entry. If you're able to do it without any issues, go back to your regular browser and then clear its cache and cookies to get rid of the stored junk files. Alternatively, you can switch to other supported browsers.
However, if the same thing happens, I'd recommend contacting Minute7's Customer Support Team. This way, they'll able to check your account and investigate this issue. You may get their contact information from their profile in the Apps menu.
Lastly, if you need some reference in dealing with your other tasks or answers to frequently asked questions, you can visit our Help Article page.
Feel welcome to reach out to me again with any concerns you may have. I'm always here to assist.
Thank you for the reply. While I don't think it is necessarily a good change for those of us not subscribed to QuickBooks Time, at least it explains why I am seeing different time-related options across different companies.
I do think there is a problem on the QuickBooks side with viewing/editing time entries synced over from a third party application with this new time entry feature. I have evaluated two third party application (Minute7 and eBillity) and they both exhibit the same behavior where the time comes over, can be pulled onto an invoice, and shows up on reports. However, if the click the link on the report to edit the time entry you get the "Something went wrong on our side message". I have some time entries that I synced over for testing and now have no ability to delete them. Interestingly, in my other company (that still has the Weekly Timesheet option), these time entries synced over can be edited without a problem.
time entry in QBO is atrocious compared to desktop. How about you go and update the dozens of articles on your site that reference the 'weekly timesheet' the next time you kill off an important and useful feature?
