Looking to see if anyone has input on how long things are taking.....
I recently e-filed our 941 for Q1 2021 and we have a refund coming because of the Employee Retention Credit. How long does it take to get the check?
I also paper filed a 941-x for Q2 of 2020 to claim the ERTC. How long will it take to get that check?
Thanks!
Hello @LarryHD2,
As of the moment, we're unable to provide the exact turnaround time as to when a refund from filing your 941 quarterly forms be available. With this, I'd recommend contacting the IRS for guidance and support.
In addition, here's an article you can read to learn more about how you can connect with them: Internal Revenue Service Payroll Tax Compliance.
Lastly, I've also included this reference for a compilation of articles you can use while working with us: Help Articles for QuickBooks Desktop Payroll.
If there's anything else that I can help you with, please let me know in the comments below. I'll be here to lend a hand.
Thanks for the reply @JonpriL
I was just hoping someone could chime in with their experience on past quarters.
As for the IRS help line, I've tried it a few times but when I get through the phone tree for the subject I want to talk about I get the message that they're too busy to take calls.
I just got a check for our Q1 2021 ERC that was efiled on our 941 on April 20.... so it took about 3.5 weeks to get the check, not bad!!
I'm still waiting on the check for Q2 of 2020 ERC which I had to paper file a 941x. I figured that would take longer.
3.5 weeks time is really fast from IRS. I filed on April 22nd. I was assuming it would be several months before we see a check. I hope I am wrong.
I e-filed mine April 10th and still no check.

I could only laugh at the recommendation to follow up with the IRS re ERC refunds not yet received. The IRS hasn't even processed all the 2019 individual income tax returns yet. And if they couldn't hire good employees pre-COVID, what makes anyone think things will get better post-COVID.
Remember, most of them sat at home on their #%$@# for a year, while receiving full pay and benefits. Is it any wonder they are behind by an insurmountable stack of work?
I think the key to your success was including the ERC on the original 941, and not having to file a 941-X.
Yes, the IRS clearly let one slip through the cracks when they so quickly sent your refund! Don't expect THAT to happen again.
When we filed the ERC credit on the original 941, we received the refund within 4 weeks. When we filed a 941x for prior, we have not received the refund yet, it has been 10 weeks. I think they are processing the current returns, but are backlogged on the amended returns...I assume there are a ton since the rules kept changing.
Efiled 941 Q2 2021 on 8/2/21 with ERC credits, and got the refund check today 9/7/21. It took 5 weeks to get the refund check.
Took 2 months for our Q2 941 to be refunded - filed by paper on 4/26 and received 6/25.
Still waiting for 2020 Q4 941-X refund - it has been over 6 months now.
I filed Q1-Q4 2020 and Q1 2021 941x in May- still have not received refund. I was able to get through to someone at the IRS (1hr 30 minute hold time). All he could tell me is that they had entered Q2, Q3 2020 and Q1 2021 into the system sometime in July. He couldn't tell me anything about Q1 or Q4 2020. He also was not able to tell me when I could expect the refund for the ERC credit. I have heard from others it could take as much as 4-8 months.......I am on month 5, so hopefully soon
What phone number did you use?
Thanks!

I mailed my 941x for 1st quarter 2021 on April 2021 and have not received the ERC refund yet. It's been 6 months. Now I'm in doubt if the IRS ever received my return. Did anyone receive the 941x ERC refund already?
Hi there, Diego.
I won't be able to provide a specific time frame as to when you'll receive the ERC refund. However, you can always reach out to the IRS to verify whether the submission of your return for the first quarter is successful or not. From there, you can take the necessary actions to get the refund in no time.

Why did you file a 941x rather than a regular 940 and do it electronically?
Anyhow, I filed our 941x for Q2 2020 on May 4, 2021 and haven't received anything yet. I called the IRS a couple months ago and they said we should have it in September (16 week processing).... that didn't happen. I called the IRS again a week ago and they told me it was still in processing. The agent put a 30 day flag on it so that hopefully it gets processed in that time. If it isn't processed in the 30 days we could elevate it to a Taxpayer Advocate.
Because when I realized I was eligible for the ERC I had already filed 941 for first quarter 2021.
I will call and find out the status of my filing. I did not hear about any 941x refund received yet.
I filed a 941x for Q4 2020 two months ahead of you and am still waiting. I've called the IRS as well - at that time they said it was in process but they hadn't worked on it for a month. They placed a 30 day flag as well.
The good news is we have received Q1 2021 and just received Q2 2021 this week.
Good luck. You may die before you get a Form 941 refund. The IRS is hopelessly behind.
What number did you use to call the IRS? I filed April 21 and haven't heard a peep.
