SOLVEDby QuickBooks38Updated February 16, 2024

Learn how to run reports to get your federal estimated quarterly tax payment and annual tax info.

QuickBooks Self-Employed helps you track your self-employed income and expenses. It calculates your federal estimated quarterly taxes so you know how much to pay each quarter. In addition, it tracks info you can use to file taxes for your self-employed work at the end of the year.

Here's how to get your tax info from QuickBooks each quarter and wrap things up at the end of the year. If you ever need help with federal estimated quarterly tax payments or filing your taxes, check the IRS website.

Step 1: Get your federal quarterly tax estimates

  1. Go to the Taxes menu.
  2. Select the Quarterly tab.
  3. Select the quarter you need estimates for.

QuickBooks summarizes the estimated amount and due date here. It updates these calculations each time you categorize income and expense transactions.

Tip: As you enter more data each quarter, QuickBooks can make better estimates. Learn how QuickBooks calculates your federal estimated quarterly tax payments.

Step 2: Make a federal estimated quarterly tax payment

Here's how to pay federal estimated quarterly taxes directly to the IRS.

Tip: If you have the Tax Bundle, you can also make tax payments right from QuickBooks.

Step 1: Complete your tax checklist

Before your annual taxes are due, QuickBooks Self-Employed gives you a tax checklist. This tells you what to review and how to finish any open tasks. It also helps you maximize your tax deductions.

  1. In QuickBooks Self-Employed, select Home.
  2. Select the Tax checklist link next to your profile ⚙ icon.
  3. Select a task on the list. This takes you to the area in QuickBooks that needs review.
  4. Review and finish each task on the list.

When you're done, QuickBooks asks if you want to export your info directly to TurboTax. You can always wait and send it when you're ready.

Step 2: Download your tax reports

Even if you don't plan to export to TurboTax, finish your tax checklist. This updates all of your financial and tax reports. To get your reports:

  1. Go to the Reports menu.
  2. Find the report you want.
  3. Select the time period or tax year from the dropdown.
  4. Select View or Download. If you want to print or email a copy, select the arrow icon ▼ and then the option.

Step 3: File your annual taxes

QuickBooks Self-Employed provides valuable info to help you do your taxes. However, it doesn't handle tax filing directly.

You have a few options. You can export your tax info directly to TurboTax, or download your reports to use in another tax filing program.

Share your info with your accountant

You can email your accountant copies of your reports. If they use QuickBooks Online Accountant, you can also invite them to review your books.
