After update from qb2017 to qb2020 i get the message; you do not have sufficient permissions to the specified folder. how do i fix the problem?

Hi there, rdell2007.

Thanks for stopping by the Community. That issue can be caused by a number of things listed below.

  • The file is saved in a protected location such as the root of C:// Drive or Program Files of a Windows Vista, 7 or 8.
  • The file is located on a restricted location.
  • Folder permissions are not set up properly.
  • The folder where the company file is saved is damaged.

Intuit recommends more than one solution for this problem. The first solution may solve your problem, or you may need to try all of them to resolve the issue. For best results, perform the solutions in the order shown.

Download and install the QuickBooks Tools Hub:

The QuickBooks Tools Hub helps fix common errors. QuickBooks needs to be closed to use the tool hub. From the QuickBooks Tools Hub, run QuickBooks File Doctor

Set QuickBooks to "Run as Administrator":

  1. Close QuickBooks Desktop.
  2. Right-click the QuickBooks Desktop icon, then select Properties.
  3. Under the Compatibility tab, select Run this program as administrator.
  4. Select Apply, then OK.

Move the company file to the default location:

  1. Close QuickBooks Desktop.
  2. Browse to the location of your company file.
  3. Right-click the company file (.qbw), then select Copy
  4. Browse to the default location, right-click and select Paste Location: C://Users/Public/PublicDocuments/Intuit/QuickBooks/Company Files
  5. Open the company file from the default location.

Create a new folder for the company file(s):

  1. Create a new folder in the same directory.
  2. Copy your company files to the new folder.
  3. Do not forget to set up folder permissions to share company files.
  4. From the QuickBooks File menu, select Open or restore a company.
  5. Select Open a company file, then Next.
  6. Browse to the new folder and select a company file.
  7. Select Open.

Test and Set folder permissions:

  1. Open Microsoft Word or notepad.
  2. Type in "Test".
  3. Save the file to the same location where the company file is saved.
  4. If the file saves without issues, your folder has the correct permissions. If you get an error, try to set up folder permissions to share company files.

Those solutions will get you in the right place and will eliminate any errors you had. If you have any other questions or concerns, feel free to post down below. Thank you for stopping by the Community and have a nice evening.

it seems that the right way to fix error is in the Windows Security dashboard.  At least for me, i began seeing this error for many of the desktop apps after a windows security update.  First try opening QB Desktop and see the error message one more time.  This will log the security alert in Windows security dashboard under "App & Browser control".   . it will be easy to find it once you open the log file to give permission to QB desktop program.    To open windows security you can either right click on the windows security icon on the lower right hand corner or just search for it.  Once you open the dashboard,   Click on "App & Browser control".  Then click on "Reputation-based protection".  Then click on "protection history" under "Potentially unwanted app blocking". Click on "Filters" down arrow and select "Block actions", then "blocked items".  The top one should be the most recent QB Desktop app protection reporting.   To allow QB Desktop to run,  click on "Low".  Windows will give you a pop up screen.  Select yes to access blocked app.  Then you'll see that QBW32.EXE was blocked from accessing a folder.  You can then click on "Controlled folder access settings". and select "Allow an app through Controlled folder access".    It seems that Windows implemented these security features to protect against ransomware.  So it is a good thing but sure makes our lives difficult when no announcement comes to explain how to fix it if you are really giving access to a legit program.   The bad thing is that you'll have to do it for any program Windows consider 3rd party.  Even my scanner stopped working... and this fixed that as well.
