Cannot open company file

Thank you for joining the thread, @Sandor 58.

Let's get this sorted out so you can get back to working order.

Are you getting an incorrect password error when trying to open your QuickBooks Desktop company file? If so, you'll want to make sure that the information entered is correct. Also, it should match your login credentials in CAMPS. If you still get an incorrect password error, let's reset your password to create a new one. Here's how:

  1. Open QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT). AT the login window, click the I forgot my password link.
  2. Fill in the information on the form that appears.
  3. Click OK. If the info you entered is correct, you’ll receive a code at your registered email address. (This is your “primary email” listed in CAMPS)
  4. Get the code from your email and enter it back in QuickBooks Desktop. QuickBooks will then guide you through creating a new admin password.

However, if you're referring to your webmail password in QuickBooks Desktop, you'll want to verify it with your email provider. Or you can reset your password directly through your email provider's website. For more details, feel free to check out this article: Fix webmail password issues in QuickBooks Desktop.

I'm still open to your replies if you still encounter issues logging in to your QuickBooks Desktop. Have a great day ahead!

Cannot open company file

I cannot open my company file.  I just get an error message stating the company file cannot be opened.

It is not a password issue.  I am already in quickbooks and wanted to open company information and it will not open.  It says it cannot open with a yellow triangle but doesn't say why it can't be open.

Cannot open company file

Hello there, @KJT11

I'm here to help you open your company file successfully. Also, I appreciate you including extra information.

We have a few solutions to fix a company file that won't open. Solution 1 is to update QuickBooks and check the file type.

  1. Update QuickBooks Desktop to the latest release.
  2. Make sure the file you want to open is a company file (.QBW). You can't open other file types, like backups (QBB) and portable files (QBM), the same way.
  3. Make sure your file isn't compressed or encrypted:
    • Right-click the company file and select Properties.
    • Select Advanced.
    • Clear the Compress and Encrypt checkboxes.
    • Select OK.

If it's showing the same outcome, we have another set of steps to follow. Open your company file without saved windows. Here's how:

  1. Open QuickBooks Desktop.
  2. In No Company Open, select your company file.
  3. Press and hold ALT on your keyboard and then select Open. Don’t let go of ALT until the file opens. If QuickBooks asks you to sign in, release ALT and enter your password. Press and hold ALT again and select OK.
  4. If your company opens successfully, turn off the Save the desktop when closing preference. Go to Edit and select Preferences.
  5. Select Desktop View.
  6. Select Don't save the desktop and then OK.
  7. Close and open QuickBooks again and open your company file.

Other solution can be found in this article: Learn how to fix general problems when your company file won't open.
