Data Migration

We have been long-time users of QuickBooks Desktop on Mac and recently underwent a transition to the new operating system. However, we encountered an unforeseen challenge as the QuickBooks Desktop format is not compatible with the new Mac operating system.

To mitigate such situations in the future, we are keenly interested in transitioning to a cloud-based version of QuickBooks. Currently, we are in the process of attempting to import our Mac desktop version to the cloud.

Our QuickBooks file has the extension .qb2020, although during our troubleshooting efforts, it's possible that someone on our team may have altered the original extension to this format. We are now seeking your expertise and assistance in successfully importing our .qb2020 file to the cloud.

Any guidance or support you can provide in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Data Migration

Hi, @KellyLR.

I understand that you recently switched to a new Mac operating system and ran into some problems with QuickBooks Desktop. To avoid similar issues in the future, you want to move to a cloud-based version of QuickBooks. Right now, you're trying to import your .qb2020 file to the cloud and could use some help with it.

Please note the following:

  1. You can only transfer QuickBooks Desktop for Mac files to the US version of QuickBooks Online. Make sure you have the right version for a successful transfer.
  2. If your file has more than 350,000 targets, you'll need to condense your file before moving it.

Here's what you can do to import your .qb2020 file to the cloud:

  1. Sign in to your QuickBooks Desktop file as the admin.
  2. Go to the File menu and select Export, then choose To QuickBooks Online
  3. Click Get started.
  4. Choose whether you want to Export all your company file data or Export specific data.
  5. If you use inventory, you'll have the option to decide whether you want to move inventory or not.
  6. If you already have a QuickBooks Online account, select Yes, sign me in and enter your credentials. If you don't have an account, select No, I need to create a new one and follow the prompts to create a new account.
  7. Select the QuickBooks Online company where you want to move your data, then click on Continue.

The migration process will start, and your QuickBooks Desktop data will replace any existing data in QuickBooks Online.

That's it! Your .qb2020 file will be imported to the cloud-based QuickBooks Online. If you have any further questions or need more assistance, feel free to ask.

Once you have successfully moved your data to QuickBooks Online, you will receive an email confirmation. Please note that it may take up to 12 hours for the confirmation to arrive.
