Error 15103 when updating

Hi there,

I work for a nonprofit organization that keeps it's company file on a remote server. We don't use multi-user mode because it has caused too many issues in the past. We primarily only need 1 user (for myself) and then our treasurer also uses it for monthly reconciliation. We both login to a VPN service to access our remote server, then open QBD and open the company file directly from the server. However, a few weeks ago, it started getting incredibly slow, like it takes a full 2-3 minutes between actions: click enter bills, then walk away for a few minutes, then enter the bill information and click save, then walk away for a few minutes. And if there are any notifications or pop-ups, then it takes the same several minutes just to close the pop-up.

Now the real problem is that it says I need to update QBD. But when I go to select Update, the Error 15103 pops up. I have tried troubleshooting to the best of my ability (like using the "run as admin" function) but nothing is working. When I run in admin mode, my VPN server doesn't show up as an option, so I'm not actually able to open our company file.

It worked in the past, and we have never had issues like this with the file being housed on a remote server, but recently it has just become so frustrating. And I'm not able to use payroll without updating.

Any help or tips would be much appreciated!

Error 15103 when updating

Let me help you fix Error 15103 in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT), DunnCountyHuman.

This error code typically appears during the process of updating QBDT or when downloading the latest tax table update. There can be various reasons behind this issue, such as:

  • The Shared Download drive wasn't mapped correctly
  • A missing file or component for payroll updates
  • Damaged windows files
  • A firewall setting that can block payroll updates in QBDT
  • QB File Copy Service (FCS) is disabled
  • Unable to verify digital signatures

Before troubleshooting, you can check your firewall and internet security settings. Then, you can download the updates as an administrator by following these steps:

  1. Close your company files and QBDT.
  2. Right-click on the QBDT icon, then choose Run as Administrator.
  3. Click Yes on the message that asks, "Do you want to allow this program to make changes to your computer?"
  4. Download the newest QuickBooks Desktop product updates or the latest payroll tax table update again.
