Intermittent issue on file share - "You do not have sufficient permissions to the specified folder"

For some reason, users in our organization have been receiving the attached error when trying to access company files across Premier 2020-22 and Enterprise 21.  They are stored on a file share we've used for this purpose for years without issues. The server is running the appropriate versions of QB Database Server Manager.  The users all have full control on the share.  And oddly, the issue is intermittent.  If they continue closing the company files and reopening them, it eventually works without issue (usually 2-5 attempts does the trick).

QB File doctor doesn't seem to show any issues, and if the company files in question are pulled down to a local machine, they of course open without issue.  Since the issue is intermittent, I don't think permissions are at fault.  Has anyone run into this before or have any suggestions?

Intermittent issue on file share - "You do not have sufficient permissions to the specified folder"

I'm here to work with you to resolve this intermittent issue you've received while accessing the specified folder in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT), @jbachta.

This insufficient permission error you have can be caused by one or more of the following:

  • The file is saved in a protected location such as the root of C:// Drive or Program Files of a Windows Vista, 7 or 8.
  • The file is located in a restricted location.
  • Folder permissions are not set up properly.
  • The folder where the company file is saved is damaged.

We recommend more than one solution for this problem. Since you've already utilized QuickBooks File Doctor, you can perform the next solution we have. This is to set QuickBooks to Run as Administrator. Here's how:

  1. Close QuickBooks Desktop.
  2. Right-click the QuickBooks Desktop icon, then select Properties.
  3. Under the Compatibility tab, select Run this program as administrator.
  4. Select Apply, then OK.

In case the intermittent issue persists, I'd recommend performing the solutions in the order shown in this article starting with Solution 3Message: You do not have sufficient permissions to the specified folder.

Also, to further guide you in managing the growth of your business using QBDT, I'd recommend checking out this article: QuickBooks Help Articles. It includes topics about account management, banking, and expenses, to name a few.

Let me know in the comments if you have other concerns about accessing shared files in QBDT. Please don't hesitate to drop a comment below, and I'll gladly help. Take care, and I wish you continued success, @jbachta.
