With Desktop Pro 2018 being discontinued soon, we plan to upgrade to Desktop Pro Plus 2021 and would like to also do 'Remote access via hosting' but are wondering how the migrations will work? We currently are self hosted (I think?) using multi-user mode, with 2 users and just trying to figure out the 'Remote access via hosting' piece, i.e. what are the steps involved in upgrading and moving to 'Remote access via hosting' .
Thanks for sharing your concerns here in the Community, @ailoilo. I can share with you some ideas on how remote access via hosting works.
Initially, QuickBooks Desktop requires that 3 conditions are met before it can allow access to company files:
Once met, you can access the company file via hosting modes. Refer to In Hosting Local & Remote files mode section outlined in this help article: Hosting your company data in multi-user mode in QuickBooks Desktop.
For future reference, check out this article to learn more about how to host a QuickBooks Desktop company file. It includes a quick video tutorial for your visual guide.
Feel free to message again if you have more questions about hosting. I'm always around here to help.
You may have 2 options:
1. If you still consider for self hosting, you may explore this app.

2. Otherwise, purchase your QBD 2021 license normally and contact an authorized QB cloud hosting. You just submit the license/product code and your backup file to them. They will prepare it and ready to use for you. You are allowed to migrate license and data to another authorized QB cloud hosting with the same process.

Hi ailoilo,
Hope you’re doing great. I wanted to see how everything is going about the remote access via hosting concern you had yesterday. Was it resolved?
Do you need any additional help or clarification? If you do, just let me know. I’d be happy to help you at any time.
Looking forward to your reply. Have a pleasant day ahead!
If we buy Pro Plus 2021 licenses with remote access via hosting, what would be our next steps? Do we download/update QuickBooks on each of our computers even though we want our data files in the "cloud" rather than on site? How much downtime?

Hi there, ailoilo.
I appreciate you for coming back here to QuickBooks Community to ask for more clarification about how remote access via hosting migration works when you buy Pro Plus 2021.
QuickBooks Desktop with Hosting offers protection anytime, anywhere, and on any device accessing your data. Your team all works with the same info at the same time. No matter where they are and no matter if they use a Mac, PC, or tablet.
Once you buy a Pro Plus 2021 licenses with remote access via hosting, the next step you'll need to perform is getting a cloud server/hosting for your company file to be shared online. Hosting is another term for having the file in the cloud. Your QuickBooks software and data are stored (hosted) on an enterprise-level web server at a secure facility. Then you can access them over a secure internet connection from anywhere or any device instead of using your local network.
For additional information, you can refer to the articles below.
Please refer to this article to see different information about the new and improved features in QBDT 2021 to help you get paid faster and to make the data accurate: What’s new in QuickBooks Desktop 2021.
Please let me know if you any other questions about this. I've got your back and am always happy to help. Thanks for reaching out, wishing you and your business all the best.
Do we download/update QuickBooks on each of our computers and just access the data file on the 'host' site?! or will we log into the 'host' site to access the QuickBooks software and all? Another way to ask this question... Is our data file the only thing in the "cloud"/hosted or is the whole QuickBooks program in the "cloud"/hosted?
I appreciate you for getting back to us and adding some clarifications, @ailoilo.
I’m here to chime in and share with you additional details about logging in to your QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) software via remote access.
No need to download and update QBDT on each computer, your software and data are stored (hosted) on a secure facility. All you have to do is to launch the remote access app and log in with your user ID and password and you’re all good to go.

When you are hosting your QuickBooks Desktop, you are running it on a browser with the internet connection. You don't need to install QuickBooks on your machines.
