Join nowI am new to this forum ..... I recently bought a new computer and thought that I could install Quickbooks Pro on the new computer and restore my backup file and everything would be OK. The file restored perfectly but what I discovered was that the Attach folder does not backup and that should have saved it and GST Returns folder separately (manually) and then copied to new computer. Is there a way to do this automatically?
Solved! Go to Solution.
No there is not a way to have QB back up or transfer the attachment folder, you have to do it manually
then open QB, and use the company menu>documents>repair attached document links

This is OK for me (now that I know you have to do it). I do have IT expertise and knowledge, but for someone without that knowledge, there is a GAPING whole in the product. A Backup shoud backup ALL elements and restore them so the novice user is looked after. This is really a flaw in the software and should be fixed.
I experienced the same issue and lost a year and a half of business receipts! Yes this is a huge flaw along with others such as the program crashing when you work with attachments or print to PDF.
Hi there, @Anonymous.
Glad to have you back here in the Community. I'm here to share additional information about QuickBooks Attached Documents.
As @Rustler mentioned above, transferring back up attachments in QuickBooks Desktop is unavailable. You'll need to manually backup of the “Attach” folder which can be found in the same location as your QuickBooks company file. For more information about this process, please refer to this article: QuickBooks Attached Documents: FAQs and common issues.
While the option is not yet available, I encourage you to send us feedback on how we can improve your QuickBooks Desktop experience. This way our Product Developers will be able to determine those features that your business need the most.

I have done all the steps and when I hit "Repair Link" QB crashes and closes.
Hello Mommy2,
It's recommended to close the program when doing the repair process. This is to avoid losing any unsaved data or causing additional damage to the application.
When you click the Repair button, the system forces the application to close so it can proceed in repairing the application. After that, you might want to reopen QuickBooks.
It would also be useful if you can provide a screenshot or any error messages/codes you've encountered while using QuickBooks. Thanks in advance!
I get a "Unrecoverable ERROR" message. Code 14101 06742
Then it ask if I want to send a report, which I normally do. Then the program closes.
Thanks for getting back to us, Mommy2.
Unrecoverable errors are random errors caused by a data file damage or an update installation that wasn't completed. Let's make sure that your QuickBooks is updated to the latest release.
Once done, make sure to create a backup of your company file. Then follow the solutions in this article: Unrecoverable Error.
If you still get the same error after the solutions, please contact our Phone Support Team. We can investigate this further.

to backup QBD attachments files, this alternative method works lickety-split:
type cmd in your windows operating system search box to open a command prompt
in the command prompt window type (substitute paths for your source and destination folders)
xcopy "C:\data\quickBooks\Attach" "G:\QBD\Attach" /E
