Classes and Projects

Thank you for visiting the QuickBooks Community, Dean53. I'll share details on how your data works when switching from QuickBooks Desktop to QuickBooks Online and ensure you can achieve your goal by performing an alternative way below.

The platforms for QuickBooks Online and QuickBooks Desktop are distinct. Several features and functions work differently and are meant to work independently. With this, a simple way or option to convert your QBDT classes to QBO as Projects is currently unavailable. 

The QBDT classes will convert or remain as it is in the Online version as long as you have the QBO Plus subscription. Then, ensure that this feature is enabled in QBO for a successful migration process. Additionally, only Jobs move to QuickBooks Online as Projects. Since the option you need isn't possible at this moment, I recommend manually moving your class data from QBDT to QBO as a project. Otherwise, you can go to MarketPlace to see hundreds of apps that you can integrate into QBDT. This way, it'll help you convert the Desktop classes to QBO as a project.

QBO help said there was a way and that he would email me documentation, but he has yet to do it.

There no way at this time. You have to register the Project data manually after convert it to QBO. You can purchase a 3rd party service to convert data with Class or Job from QB Desktop to QBO with Class. I would recommend to convert your data from QB Desktop as is and start using the Project feature in QBO from scratch for only new projects. You can access your historical data in QB Desktop for good to lower conversion costs.

Thank you @4Gal for the response. Sorry, to be clear, there are 3rd party products/services that can convert QBD Classes to QBO Projects?  If so, can you provide some links?  I’ve been googling all day and have not seen a thing.

No migration tools can access Project features at this time.You may have 3 options as I mentioned before

1. Register your data manually in the Project feature

2. Purchase a 3rd party service to convert data to QBO + Class

3. Convert your data to QBO as is and keep using QB Desktop to access your historical data. You can use the trial version for good if required.
