Installed new QB Pro 2020 on new laptop and it installed 32 bit not 64 and didn't give me an option. How do I change to 64 bit?

Nice to have you here in the Community, @KishaK.

Allow me to provide some information about QuickBooks Desktop installs.

Every version of QuickBooks is 32 bits, but you can install the 64 bit on a computer as well. I want to ensure you have no installation issues, so I've included a list of system requirements for QuickBooks Desktop installation below:

  • Windows 10, all editions including 64-bit, natively installed
  • Windows 8.1 (Update 1), all versions including 64-bit, natively installed
  • Windows 7 SP1, all versions including 64-bit, natively installed (only supported until January 2020)
  • Windows Server 2016
  • Windows Server 2012 R2
  • Windows Server 2011, Standard and Essentials
  • Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 (only supported until January 2020)

You can find more information about the system requirements in this article: System requirements for QuickBooks Desktop 2020 and Enterprise Solutions 20.0.

I'm only a few clicks away if you have any other questions. Best wishes.

Thank you.  I had no issues installing, just the program constantly freezing and getting an error 'connection lost' regarding network and needing to use the program on the same computer the company file is located.  I am NOT on a network and the file is on the same computer as the program.  I have to abort and start again.  I have spent 4 hours with levels 1 & 2 techs and still doing the same thing.  Call tech support again to get this resolved ASAP!  Frustrated!!

Hi KishaK. Thanks for replying. I want to make sure no stone is left unturned, and I feel like the next step to getting you up and running is to determine whether the issue is with the company file itself or the computer. The easiest way to do this would be to try installing QuickBooks Desktop on a different computer and attempt to open the file. If this still doesn't work, the issue is likely that the file has become corrupted and it will be necessary to restore a backup

However, if it does work on another computer then the issue is likely with the computer being used and I recommend you reach out to an IT professional to look into what kind of system issues may be occurring. Since you have already spoken with our phone support, I would like to not cover too many steps they may have gone over already. But, I do have another suggestion that may get you back up and running.

Sometimes with incorrect windows permissions, this error can occur when using a locally stored file. So just follow these steps to check if your permissions are set up correctly:

  1. Ensure QuickBooks Desktop is closed.
  2. Navigate to C:\Program Files\ through Windows ExplorerNote: If you see C:\Program Files (x86)\, go to that folder instead as that means you have a 64bit computer.
  3. Right-click the Intuit folder.
  4. Choose Properties.
  5. Go to the Security tab then select the Advanced button.
  6. In the Owner field up top, ensure the Users group is selected. If you see SYSTEM or something other than Users, you will need to take ownership of the Intuit folder. Take Ownership if you do not see USERS as the owner
    1. In the Advanced Security Settings for Intuit permissions window, select Change for the owner field.
    2. Type USERS and press Enter.
    3. Place a checkmark in the Replace owner on sub-containers and objects box.
    4. Select Users (YOUR COMPUTER NAME\Users) Full Control and click Ok.
  7. In the Intuit folder properties window, and on the security tab, now click the Edit button.
  8. Select Users (YOUR COMPUTER NAME\Users) and make sure Full Control box has a checkmark in it. C
  9. Select Ok
  10. See if this resolves the issue you were experiencing. If not, you will need to repeat these steps above for these additional Intuit folder locations:
    • C:\Program Files\Common Files\Intuit (Note: if you are on a 64bit computer, you will need to use C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Intuit)
    • C:\ProgramData\Intuit
    • C:\Users\Your User Name\AppData\Local\Intuit

If this doesn't work there are also a few more options available such as configuring your Windows UAC controls correctly, here's an article that describes a few things that can cause the company file connection lost error. Let me know if this helps and please don't hesitate to come back if you need anything else. Have a great day.
