Moving data to new laptop

I have 2016 Desktop and have successfully downloaded the 2016 desktop software to a new computer using product license. I'm having trouble getting the data to the new computer. I have backed up the data on a flash drive, saved to Documents on new computer (no extra characters, but it shows as a .qbw file), chose Open or Restore an Existing Company on new software, find the file and I get the error code 6000-83. I have tried several fixes mentioned here for such an error - nothing works.

Then I copied the entire Quickbooks 2016 file from old computer onto flash drive. Copied file to Documents on new computer, as I've read that is another option. However, I cannot find a way to have new QB see the file. The only option is to restore a .qbb file, from Open or Restore an Existing Company.

Any suggestions? Thanks.

Moving data to new laptop

It sounds like you have copied your *.qbw company file to the new computer.

Open it by starting in QuickBooks and pick File | Open or Restore company... from the menu.

Then pick open and navigate to the place you put the file and select it.

Thanks, but I've done that multiple times - keep getting the error message stated in my post.

Can you still open your company file on the old machine?

Moving data to new laptop

Hello there, dianedef.

Since you encounter Error -6000,-83 while restoring your company file in QuickBooks Online, you can follow these steps to troubleshoot the issue:

  1. Open the Windows Start menu.
  2. Type “File Explorer” into the search and open File Explorer.
  3. Find and open the folder with your backup company file.
  4. Right-click the file with .qbb at the end of the file name and select Rename. This is your backup company file (also known as a QBB file).
  5. Remove any special characters, symbols, or spaces from the filename.
  6. Right-click the folder holding the QBB file and select Rename. Remove any special characters, symbols, or spaces.
  7. Follow the steps to restore your company file.

If you still see Error -6000,-83, move on to Solution 2.

Solution 2: Create a portable company file

If you can't restore your QBB file, go back to and open the company file you created the backup from.

  1. Follow the steps to make a portable company file (a QBM).
  2. Use the portable company file to restore your company file.

However, if your company file isn't on a server and you still see Error -6000,-83, reach out to our support team so we can help.

Keep me posted if you need additional help regarding restoring your company file. Have a great day.

RE: I've done that multiple times - keep getting the error message stated in my post.

I think I've seen this error as well. I think it can be a timing issue when two parts of QuickBooks are trying to access the file at once.  Try starting to open the file but as you do, in the file dialog window, hover over the company file with your mouse, then click on it, and then wait a few seconds. Then proceed to open the file.
