Quickbooks Won't Open After Big Sur Update

Hi there, Dubdog and Aprentice.

I'll provide additional information about QuickBooks for Mac running on macOS 11 Big Sur.

Apple's new macOS 11 Big Sur was just released on November 12, 2020. As mentioned above, no supported version of QuickBooks for Mac is fully compatible with this new macOS version.

Intuit is working very hard to ensure our supported versions of QuickBooks for Mac will work as designed and hope to have this completed very soon. For now, QuickBooks will open and can be used with the understanding there may be some unexpected behaviors. If you haven't installed the new macOS version, we do recommend waiting if you plan on using QuickBooks for Mac on that computer.

The alternative way or other software is to use at least macOS 10.14 (Mohave); supported by macOS 10.14 (Mojave). For additional information, you can click this article: System requirements for QuickBooks Desktop 2020 and Enterprise Solutions 20.0.

Please refer to this article to see information about the unsupported versions of QuickBooks Desktop for Mac: Risk of data file corruption and data loss for QuickBooks Desktop for Mac users who attempt to run ....

Do visit us again in the Community if you have other questions or concerns. I'm happy to help. Have a good one.

Quickbooks Won't Open After Big Sur Update

Like so many others who have small businesses, I also installed Big Sur to unknowingly loose my Quickbooks.

The impact is awful. Makes me consider discontinuing  Quickbooks

Have to go back and compose an Invoice to give to my customers and the later update my Quickbooks.

It also forces me to spend money on a new Quickbooks.

I was using Quickbook Desktop 2016 for MAC and had the same problem.  I just downloaded the 2020 version and it is now working.  I hope that might help everyone else with the same problem.

Quickbooks Won't Open After Big Sur Update

I have quickbooks 2020 but I have not upgraded to Big Sur on account of Intuit saying it is unsupported. I'm glad 2020 worked for you on Big Sur but I can afford to wait a bit longer on Big Sur (as frustrating as it is that Intuit can't seem to devote reasonable (and expected resources to ensure compatibility on day 1 of the long awaited (and expected Big Sur release)).

Given Intuit's position on support, I recommend anyone already using 2020 to hold off on Big Sure update. If you already updated to Big Sur and you are stuck hard as in it is impacting business, you might try @chwy 's fix, however you may also be forced to then buy an update that you were not planning on.

I restarted my computer this morning. I checked Quickbooks again, and it was working. I was also able to copy a file to iCloud, which I wasn't able to do yesterday. So, restart your computer at least twice, and it might work? I also have Big Sur 11.0.1installed.

Thank you for your reply.

But all developers had 6 months to be ready for 11/12.

Imagine how clients would respond to your proactivity? That creates loyalty.

Of course, it would not be perfect and there may be bugs but those are tweaks that can be done after the release.

I am already looking for a solution outside Quickbooks. Any suggestions anyone?

Thanks,

Perhaps QB should have gotten ahead of this issue by advising license holders that QB was/is ill-prepared to support Big Sur. A simple proactive communication message would have alleviated the angst caused to the many unsuspecting license holders like myself who are now frustrated as we cannot event open the software to process or view anything.

QB writes, "For now, QuickBooks will open and can be used with the understanding there may be some unexpected behaviors." It's a false statement as the software cannot be used at all. Please get your facts correct.

I would like to be added to the notification list when the fix is available. For me it's QB 2016 Desktop. [email address removed]

Yes, exactly. But then, the online version, QBO, significantly lacks features that someone running a business needs and depends on.

I think it is time we vote with our pocket books and credit card and switch to an alternative to QuickBooks (which is not so quick to begin with, wonder where that name really even came from....!?)

They are basically ignoring important requests but then send out these dumb questionnaire about some random dumb new features that nobody wants. Th vast majority just wants to get their job don with a reliable and comprehensive accounting program. They are failing that mission bitterly. Time to move on!

@dgunby

QBD 2016 is an outdated version. I am not sure it will support BigSur.

Hello, awcawc.

We're unable to provide a timeline for this to be completely supported. Rest assured that developers are working on this.

I'd encourage checking out  the risk of data file corruption and data loss for QuickBooks Desktop for Mac users who attempt to run Q... to details for unsupported versions of QuickBooks Desktop for Mac.

You're patience and understanding are much appreciated as we work on this.

Rest assured?  Your organization breeds absolutely no confidence.  I literally use a 3rd software product that doesn’t help people collect money for their business... and they have a dev team of 5 and they updated their product 2 months ago.  You literally have people who are unable to bill customers and you want them to “rest” assured?  Honestly, you’d be better off not replying than insulting everyone that we should just be patient when your organization dropped the ball (AGAIN!).

We should all just cancel

our subscription.

that is THE ONLY WAY these people will do anything. Customer obviously don’t matter, nor their input. The only language they understand and will act upon is falling revenue or income.

You have no appreciation for our frustrations. I cannot access invoices that I had input before November 12th and can no longer access or send to the customers...making me look like a Mickey Mouse shop that uses Mickey mouse accounting software (perhaps the latter part has now been proven true). Frustrating beyond belief!! Unbelievable lack of preparedness and responsiveness. And no mention of any potential compensation for QB's lack of preparedness.

I would strongly suggest that you and other moderators publish a daily update of what is fixed and what isn't to give us some (false) hope of an end to this nightmarish situation. But a proactive communication would likely be too much to ask for. :-/

I also have QB 2016 for Mac and it will no longer open since i installed Big Sur.  I see QB 2020 for Mac for $45 on Ebay.  So you saying it opened for you no problem after upgrading to version 2020?  I'm tempted to go the route you went.

I ran into this mess last year with Catalina, this year I did not do the Big Sur beta because of Quickbooks and now it still has not released an update!  I'm dumping this and going with Quicken (has a yearly subscription but much cheaper than QB). Does not have all the business features but there are work arounds. I find it much easier to use and I can download from all my banks and credit cards with is a BIG Plus..

I'm still waiting for the updated version that will work with Big Sur. The last update to Catalina caused my business major frustration and problems. That is one of the down sides of Mac, always behind the curve, I avoided doing the update this time and am impatiently waiting for the update. Hopefully we don't have to wait much longer, TAX preparation time is here! Inventory takes time!

You cannot click on New Features if QB will not open.

Is there any update on the timeline for QB 2016 to work with Big Sur?

I'm confused by all the Corp Speak answering the many complaints about Quick Books not opening in Big Sur.  If it won't open what good are all the suggestions about the wonderful new features and how to upgrade our present versions when a Big Sur compatible upgrade is available?

This problem could not come at a worse time as the calendar year which is the same fiscal year for most small businesses is closing fast.  I'm flabbergasted that a tax software company would put customers into this oredicament and then offer nothing useful as to how to get out of it.

Simply, it won't open.  So how do we upgrade?
