I encountered the same problem as yours a month ago. Currently, we're unable to retrieve invoice data when you're signed out from your account.
Since you'd mentioned that it defaulted to an earlier unmodified version when you saved the invoice, I suggest contacting our Customer Care Technical Support. There they can pull the account using appropriate tools to sort it out for you and fix the problem on their end.

Spoke with representative. Shestated that QB does not have ability to search my account to restore what was lost. I have changed my settings to not "timeout"....but we'll see. It appears to be a glitch in the onLine version (maybe with Mac/Saffari? If I work longer than a certain time (1-Hour), and select "Save", the software logs-me-out (without any "warning") which then dumps all my data/work and reopens my invoice to the last-saved version....NOT my "current" work, which has NOT been saved by the "save" button. Thanks Quickbooks :-( This has happened to me on more than one occasion, every month when I create my invoices.
We didn't mean to inconvenience you, kpmarchitect.
This isn’t what we would expect to see, so I want to get this fixed as soon as possible. I understand how frustrating this must be, so bear with me as we walk through some troubleshooting steps.
It could be that the stored temporary internet files in the system are the reason why your session suddenly logs out. Let's start by accessing your account in a private window. This mode will not save your searches, visited pages, login details, and cookies.
Check out these keyboard shortcuts:
If it works, let's go back to your regular browser and clear the cache to improve the system performance.
If the same thing happens, let's use other supported browsers. The one you are currently on maybe having a temporary issue with QuickBooks. Using another browser in the meantime will allow you to get back to work.
A lot of QBO users are also asking about the auto-save feature. I'll personally share your suggestion with our product engineers. This way, it might given a chance to be added in our next product updates.
