2016 desktop company file to quickbooks online

I’m having issues transferring my company file to quickbooks online. After spending 4 hours on chats, phone calls, and screen share with 9 different quickbooks reps we still didn’t figure out what the problem is. When I try to update my 2016 version a few errors come up. We then determined we need 2021 desktop to transfer the company file to quickbooks online. They had me download the trial version and from there we still couldn’t transfer the company file to the 2021 desktop version. The last Quickbooks rep I spoke with had me download the Quickbooks tools and from there we tried to run a scan on the file to see what the problem was and if it could be fixed. It would load, start scanning, then nothing. We tried multiple times, restarted the computer etc. and still can’t fix the file to transfer it to 2021. Once he realized this he hung up on me and exited out of screen share. (This basically happened with every customer service rep I talked to that day). Really don’t feel like wasting my time again so I figured I would try here. Any suggestions?

2016 desktop company file to quickbooks online

Hi, @Bbstr07.

I appreciate your feedback about this matter and thank you for performing the steps to move your file from QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) to QuickBooks Online (QBO). I'm here to ensure you won't go through this kind of experience again, and I'll help you with exporting your file successfully.

Yes, it's right to restore your file to QBDT 2021 before transferring to QBO. To get started, please make sure to update your QBDT and check if your file isn't too big to export to avoid issues. For your guide, you can open these articles:

Once done, open QBDT as an admin to import the file. For QBDT Pro or Premier, you can follow these steps:

  1. Go to the Company menu, then select Export Company File to QuickBooks Online.
  2. Select Start your export.
  3. Sign in as an admin to your QuickBooks Online company.
  4. If you track inventory in QuickBooks Desktop:
  1. Select the Choose online company dropdown, and choose the QuickBooks Online company you want to be replaced by your company file.
  2. Select Continue.
  3. Enter “Agree” in the text field, then select Replace.
  4. Select Yes, go ahead and replace the data, then select Replace.

For QBDT Enterprise, you can check out the steps provided from this link: Move your QuickBooks Desktop file to QuickBooks Online.

In case you're getting the same result, please feel free to share the error message in this thread. This way, I can gather enough information and check for any open investigation. You may also reconnect with our Support Team so a live agent can follow up and check your previous cases.

Once your data are available in QBO, you can use this article as your guide while handling your transactions in QBO: Help articles, video tutorials, and more.

If you have any other questions, please let me know by adding a comment below. I'm always here to help. Keep safe!

@Bbstr07

You should check these 2 points;
1. Migrate data from QBD US version to QBO US version.

2. Open your QBD file and hit f2 key. Your Total Targets is 350K or less to migrate to QBO. Run the Condense Data utility if required.

Last resort, purchase a 3rd party migration service.
