How does one change industry type of business?
Hi there, B A,
You're unable to change the industry type once you've already set up a company file in QuickBooks Desktop for Mac.
You'll want to create a backup of your file, create a new company with the correct industry. Then, restore the file from there. I'm glad to walk you through the setup process:
After that, you can restore the backup file to the new industry created above.

how do I change industry We started the company information awhile ago
and now we want to continue but I don't see a "next" button. Is there any way
to access it?
Hi Estimator1900,
As my colleague shared above, once setup, you're unable to change the company's industry type. However, you can create a new company file and enter the correct industry there.
You can follow MaryLandT's response to create a new file.
If still don't have the Next button, you can run the verify and rebuild steps. This fix the most common data issues in a company file. Here's how:
If you see Your data has failed the integrity check, you'll have to rebuild the program.
Once done, you can try creating a new file again.
Also, for some guides and tips in managing your QuickBooks Desktop for Mac file, you can visit our Self-Help Articles page.
Let me know how these steps work on your end and if you're able to change your company's industry type. Feel free to mention my name if you have other concerns. Keep safe!
Thank you
I did see her answer, but I thought she was talking about MAC and I don't have
a MAC.
Hello there, @Estimator1900. Thanks for getting back to us and providing clarification with us.
Yes, you're right. The steps provided by my MaryLandT's are applicable for QuickBooks Desktop for Mac.
For QuickBooks Desktop, you can follow these steps:
You have two setup options:
Then, follow the onscreen steps to finish the setup. If you have an existing company file in QuickBooks, give your new one a unique name. This prevents QuickBooks from accidentally overwriting your data. Once done, select Start Working.
Then, you can check these articles for more tips and information about adding data and managing your new company file:

MaryLandT, if my existing company has a customized chart of accounts, can I say so during the set up of the new company, and then will the backup restore the COA, as well?
I'll handle this query about backup restoration for you, @GCOKC.
Whenever you restore a backup of a QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) company file, it recreates an exact copy of it. This includes the custom Chart of Accounts you stated above.
When you're ready to proceed with the restore process, follow these steps to browse for the backup file:
To restore the file, go with the steps below:
In case you're using QBDT for Windows, open this article instead: Restore a backup of your company file.
Keep this article for future reference: Fix backup company file issues in QuickBooks Desktop. It has troubleshooting steps you can do if you encounter error messages during the restoration process.
Feel free to post a reply in the comments below if you have other questions about backup restoration in QBDT. I'll get back to you as soon as I can. Have a pleasant day!
I’m having the same issue using my iPad to access the app.
I believe I selected the incorrect business industry. How do I check and change it?
Hi @Jntroofer.
I appreciate you looking at changing the industry type in the iPad app. However, this setting is only available using the QuickBooks Desktop or Mac computer application.
You'll want to follow MaryLandT's direction to create a backup file and then create a new one to correct the industry type. Please take note that the steps are applicable for QuickBooks Desktop for Mac users. In this manner, you can restore the backup file to the new company with the right industry type.
And if you're using QuickBooks Desktop for Windows, I suggest following SarahannC's detailed steps. This is the same with QuickBooks Desktop for Mac, but the terms and user interface are different.
On the other hand, your idea to access the IPad and change the industry type is interesting. In the mean time, I suggest submitting feedback through QuickBooks. You can go to the Help menu and select Send Feedback Online or utilize this link to submit feedback.
We also want to let you know that not only our product developers can take part with the enhancements, you can also be part of it. You may want to visit these links just in case:

You'll want to create a backup of your file, create a new company with the correct industry. Then, restore the file from there. I'm glad to walk you through the setup process:
- Open QuickBooks. You’ll see the No Company Open window.
- Click Get Started.
- On the Create New Company page, enter information about your company, then click Next.
- You’ll see the Choose your industry and chart of accounts window.
- Select the type of business that comes closest to describing your company. QuickBooks creates all the accounts that have a checkmark.
- This is our best guess for the accounts we think you’ll need based on the type of industry you’re in.
- You can make changes if you like. If you make changes and want to go back to QuickBooks suggested accounts, click Default.
After that, you can restore the backup file to the new industry created above.
