Change "industry type" of business

Hi there, B A,

You're unable to change the industry type once you've already set up a company file in QuickBooks Desktop for Mac.

You'll want to create a backup of your file, create a new company with the correct industry. Then, restore the file from there. I'm glad to walk you through the setup process:

  1. Open QuickBooks. You’ll see the No Company Open window.
  2. Click Get Started.
  3. On the Create New Company page, enter information about your company, then click Next.
  4. You’ll see the Choose your industry and chart of accounts window.
  5. Select the type of business that comes closest to describing your company. QuickBooks creates all the accounts that have a checkmark.
  6. This is our best guess for the accounts we think you’ll need based on the type of industry you’re in.
  7. You can make changes if you like. If you make changes and want to go back to QuickBooks suggested accounts, click Default.

After that, you can restore the backup file to the new industry created above.

Don't hesitate to leave a comment if you still have questions. Thank you for posting and stay safe!

How do I change the industry type in QuickBooks Desktop Pro Plus 2020?  I chose the wrong one and all the tax mapping is wrong and I cannot access Sales & Use tax under vendors.

You can edit the income tax form, CarolynM.

Changing it to the correct tax form will make sure you're processing the appropriate income tax return.

  1. Go to the Company menu at the top to choose My Company.
  2. Click the Pencil icon for Company Information to access the Report Information tab.
  3. From there, select the correct tax return used by the business.
  4. Click OK to save the changes.

Here's an article that will help you get started using QuickBooks Desktop: User guide.

Furthermore, if you want to use sales tax, it's a feature you need to turn on. Here's how:

  1. Go to the Edit menu at the top, then select Preferences on the drop-down.
  2. On the Preferences window, choose Sales Tax on the left pane.
  3. Click on the Company Preferences tab.
  4. Select Yes to turn on sales tax.

Once done, you can now set up a sales tax item. Here's how:

  1. On the Company Preferences tab, click the Add Sales Tax item.
  2. From the Type drop-down, choose Sales Tax Item.
  3. Enter your preferred name for the tax item on the Sales Tax Name field.
  4. On the Tax Rate (%) field, enter the specific rate for the item.
  5. Then, on the Tax Agency field, type the name of the collecting agency. If the agency is not on the list yet, select Add New to set it up.
  6. Click on OK once done.

You can also refer to this article for more information: Set up sales tax in QuickBooks Desktop.

how do I change industry   We started the company information awhile ago

and now we want to continue but I don't see a "next" button. Is there any way

to access it?

Hi Estimator1900,

As my colleague shared above, once setup, you're unable to change the company's industry type. However, you can create a new company file and enter the correct industry there.

You can follow MaryLandT's response to create a new file.

If still don't have the Next button, you can run the verify and rebuild steps. This fix the most common data issues in a company file. Here's how:

  1. From the File menu, select Utilities.
  2. Select Verify Data.

If you see Your data has failed the integrity check, you'll have to rebuild the program.

Once done, you can try creating a new file again.

Also, for some guides and tips in managing your QuickBooks Desktop for Mac file, you can visit our Self-Help Articles page.

Let me know how these steps work on your end and if you're able to change your company's industry type. Feel free to mention my name if you have other concerns. Keep safe!

Hello there, @Estimator1900. Thanks for getting back to us and providing clarification with us.

Yes, you're right. The steps provided by my MaryLandT's are applicable for QuickBooks Desktop for Mac.

For QuickBooks Desktop, you can follow these steps:

  1. Open QuickBooks Desktop.
  2. In the No Company Open window, select Create a new company.

You have two setup options:

  • Select Express Start or Start Setup if you want to get started right away. You only need to enter your business name, industry, and business type and select Create Company File to create your company. You can enter this info later on.
  • Select Detailed Start if you want to do a complete setup, so all of your info is in from the start.

Then, follow the onscreen steps to finish the setup. If you have an existing company file in QuickBooks, give your new one a unique name. This prevents QuickBooks from accidentally overwriting your data. Once done, select Start Working

Then, you can check these articles for more tips and information about adding data and managing your new company file:

Please let us know if you still need help or have other questions about your company file. We'll be right here to assist. Take care and stay safe always.

MaryLandT, if my existing company has a customized chart of accounts, can I say so during the set up of the new company, and then will the backup restore the COA, as well?

I'll handle this query about backup restoration for you, @GCOKC.

Whenever you restore a backup of a QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) company file, it recreates an exact copy of it. This includes the custom Chart of Accounts you stated above.

When you're ready to proceed with the restore process, follow these steps to browse for the backup file:

  1. Go to the QuickBooks menu, then select Preferences.
  2. Choose Backup.
  3. Hit Reveal Backup Folder, then double-click the folder where your backup file is located.
  4. Tap Date Modified to sort by date to see your most recent backup.

To restore the file, go with the steps below:

  1. Double-click the backup file.
  2. Drag the copy of the company file to the folder where you keep your QuickBooks company. (If you see Attachments Library, include it as well.)
  3. Open QBDT for Mac.
  4. Go to Browse, then to the folder where the backup file is located.
  5. You'll see a prompt to let you know that you're opening a backup file, tap Continue.
  6. Type in a name for the company file, then Save.
  7. Hit OK.

In case you're using QBDT for Windows, open this article instead: Restore a backup of your company file.

Keep this article for future reference: Fix backup company file issues in QuickBooks Desktop. It has troubleshooting steps you can do if you encounter error messages during the restoration process.

Feel free to post a reply in the comments below if you have other questions about backup restoration in QBDT. I'll get back to you as soon as I can. Have a pleasant day!

I’m having the same issue using my iPad to access the app.
I believe I selected the incorrect business industry. How do I check and change it?

Change "industry type" of business

Hi @Jntroofer.

I appreciate you looking at changing the industry type in the iPad app. However, this setting is only available using the QuickBooks Desktop or Mac computer application.

You'll want to follow MaryLandT's direction to create a backup file and then create a new one to correct the industry type. Please take note that the steps are applicable for QuickBooks Desktop for Mac users. In this manner, you can restore the backup file to the new company with the right industry type.

And if you're using QuickBooks Desktop for Windows, I suggest following SarahannC's detailed steps. This is the same with QuickBooks Desktop for Mac, but the terms and user interface are different.

On the other hand, your idea to access the IPad and change the industry type is interesting. In the mean time, I suggest submitting feedback through QuickBooks. You can go to the Help menu and select Send Feedback Online or utilize this link to submit feedback.

We also want to let you know that not only our product developers can take part with the enhancements, you can also be part of it. You may want to visit these links just in case:

If you have other questions or need further assistance with anything in QuickBooks, feel free to comment. I'm always here to assist you. Have a nice day!

@marrysmithge

Which service do you mean? Are you asking about QuickBooks as a product/application to manage your business operation or else?

So even though I’ve purchased intuit online, I now have to purchase the app for Mac separately just to change my industry type?

that’s an additional $300+ - there must be a work around?

Please and thank you for any help,
