Version protection ensures that you always have the latest version (not update) available of the QB software, not payroll. So paying for Version Protection will "give" you in October when released the download of QB2020. If you do not want to upgrade annually at what is supposed to be a discounted price, (my annual legacy payroll product includes version protection for free) you can contact them to cancel following the procedure from this post. https://community.intuit.com/questions/1782646-how-do-i-cancel-version-protection
So you are telling me that version protection gives me annual updates to Quickbooks Pro and I should have gotten updated in October to Quickbooks 2020 even though I am currently running Quickbooks 2018?
Thanks for checking this with us, od1.
Rustler is right. On top of your Intuit QuickBooks Version Protection is a free upgrade once a new version is available. This also includes an Intuit Data Protect feature where you can automatically back up your QuickBooks company file.
All you need to know about Intuit Data Protect are covered in this article: Common questions about Intuit Data Protect.

So I just paid for an Intuit QB Pro 2020 Download in early February , but today I just got charged for QB Annual Payroll and QB Version Protection. Am I getting double charged (by paying the Version Protection and also for the 2020 Download)? It kind of sounds like it from the previous comments. I typically only update the Pro every two years.
I can share a few clarifications with your subscription with us, @GinaA8,
QuickBooks Payroll is an add-on service to enable payroll processing and taxes. You can use the software without this but the payroll function will be disabled. This is the reason why it is billed separately from the Desktop License and the Version Protection.
