The high fee charged is likely because of the payment method you selected, not the advertised 1% transfer fee, @bluecollar-servllc.

Here’s what you should do to avoid this:

  1. When paying a contractor, select “Bank Transfer (ACH)” instead of using a debit or credit card. ACH payments have fees of 1% or less. You can check the rates here: Payment rates.
  2. I also suggest checking the fee before confirming payment. Review the Fees and Limits section in the payment window.

If you’re using QuickBooks Online Payments, be sure to set your payment method to “Bank Account” rather than “Credit Card”, unless you’re comfortable with the fees that come with credit card payments.

To set your bank account as the payment method instead of a credit card in QuickBooks, follow these exact steps:

  1. Go to the Gear icon in the upper-right corner.
  2. Select Account and Settings.
  3. In the left menu, click Payments.

  4. Under the Payment methods section, click Edit (pencil icon).
  5. Choose a Bank account for your payment method instead of a credit card.
  6. Enter your bank account details if not already saved.
  7. Click Save, then Done.

Also, when sending a payment:

  1. After selecting the contractor and invoice, on the payment screen, click the payment method dropdown.
  2. Select Bank Transfer (ACH) instead of a credit card.
  3. Confirm the payment and review fees before submitting.

@bluecollar-servllc

Another option, you can use Melio to sync with QBO, pay your 1099 contractors for free with ACH and get cashbacks.
