Customers won't merge

Hi,
I'm trying to merge customers as one of the customers issues all payments. Usually, I can do this with no problem but an error keeps popping up "This name is already in use and cannot be merged. Names with subnames cannot be merged."

Customers won't merge

Welcome back to the QuickBooks Community. I'll be providing information on how merging customer in QuickBooks Desktop works. Then, to ensure you'll be able to perform the process smoothly.

 

QuickBooks won't allow merging customers if there are transactions recorded from both customers in the system. That's the reason why you're receiving the unusual error message. I recommend transferring first all transactions from the first customer to the second customer.

 

Here's how:

 

  1. Click the Customers menu at the top. Then, Customer Center.
  2. Locate the specific name customer's name.
  3. Choose a particular entry and click it to expand the page. Then, edit the customer's name and select the one you want to keep(Customer B).
  4. Click Save and close.

Additionally, you're also unable to merge customers if one of them is associated with sub customer.
