Data Loss and restoring from Accountant Copy

We are using QB 2020 (Desktop Version) and recently lost all our data. Our Accountant, who filed our taxes last year in June 2020, had a copy which he emailed us. It has QBB extension. When we try to 'Restore a backup copy' the file that he has sent does not open. We are getting a warning message, "Sorry, only QuickBooks Accountant's Edition is able to open an Accountant's Copy file. Please use Accountant's Edition, or speak to you accountant, if you need to restore this file.

My accountant is aware of this message and in fact has sent the right version of the file but we can't seem to get past this error/warning message.

Does anyone know what we maybe doing wrong?

Thanks!

Data Loss and restoring from Accountant Copy

I appreciate you coming here with us for support, AKSATLANTA.

Opening an accountant's copy requires you to use the QuickBooks version (Premier or Enterprise) your client used to create it. Then, you can follow the step below:

  1. From the File menu, select Toggle to Another Edition.
  2. Premier (or Enterprise SolutionsAccountant Edition - Home should be grayed out. If not, select its radio button.
  3. Select Next, then Toggle. Don’t worry, you can toggle back to your preferred edition once you’re done.

Once done, you can convert an accountant's copy to a company file. Just refer to the steps provided in this article: Convert an accountant's copy to a regular company file.

To get more information about using the Accountant's Copy, feel free to visit this article: Use an Accountant's Copy working file in QuickBooks Desktop.

If you're already using the Accountant's Edition, you'll want to ask your accountant to remove the accountant's copy restrictions. You can share the instructions below on how to remove the Accountant's Copy Restriction

  1. Go to the File menu, then select Send Company File.
  2. Choose Accountant's copy, then Client Activities.
  3. Select Remove Restrictions.
  4. Click Yes, I want to remove the Accountant's Copy restrictions, then OK.

Let me know the result of this troubleshooting in the comment below. I need to make sure this is resolved and you're able to recreate and send the copy. All the best!
