Desktop to Online dilemna

I have been recently hired by contractor to take over doing their payroll and book keeping. They currently use Quickbooks Desktop Pro and will be switching to the online version for better accessibility. The dilmena is that the accounting is a bit of a mess, their accountant hasn't reconciled 2017 yet and still has the accountant copy, and it doesn't appear to be happening anytime soon. 2018 is also a mess as not everything has been entered (mostly receipts expenses haven't been inputted).  The question is, it is easier to start over entirely with the online version without transferring the desktop info or should we be transferring what is currently in the desktop version to the online version even though its a tangled mess and nothing has been reconciled?

Hello, rachelhale.

For me, it will save more time if you start new with QuickBooks Online. Just make sure to get the correct balances from your books so you can just create a trial balance through Journal Entry.

Moreover, you can import your chart of accounts, customers, suppliers and Products/services list from QuickBooks Desktop into QuickBooks Online. For more information about this process, please check this article: https://quickbooks.intuit.com/community/Reports-and-accounting/Export-then-import-list-data-into-Qui...
