I’m trying to create an invoice and where the invoice # would be. It says “enter # or we’ll assign”
I’ve never seen that before so I left it blank expecting quickbooks to assign the invoice like it usually does. However when I go to save the invoice, it gives an error message.
“Custom Invoice # you chose is already used”
why is that happening and how do I get it to auto assign again.
Let me help you in getting rid of the error message, Rkid.
It will allow you to either manually enter a transaction number or let QuickBooks Online assign one if the Custom transaction numbers is turned on. We can turn it off so that the system will automatically generate one for you. Please follow these steps:
Once done, you can create an invoice and it shouldn't ask you to enter a custom Invoice number. I have some articles here you can check. These will show you more info on how to use the invoice feature in QuickBooks Online:

Thank you very much. I was able to find that setting and toggled it off. However I noticed quickbooks had been using duplicate invoice numbers. So I toggled it back on and created an invoice using the highest unused invoice number (5409). The next invoice created in my recurring invoices should be 5410 correct?
Yes, you're right, Rkid. I'll add a few pieces of information.
Once the feature is turned on, an Invoice no. field is added, and you can enter any number or letter format you want. QuickBooks will then automatically sequence the invoices based on the number you entered in this field.
